The MotoE World Championship will cease operations for the time being after its two races at the Algarve International Circuit in Portimao this Saturday. FIM and MotoGP promoter Dorna Sports explain their decision not only by the lack of interest from the fan community but also by the fact that the motorbike industry is currently focusing more on the development of non-fossil fuels. However, the temporary end of MotoE is not yet final, as they want to continue to monitor how the situation within the industry will develop.
In 2019, MotoE was introduced as a new class as part of some MotoGP European races - initially under the status of the World Cup from 2019 to 2022. It then became an official FIM World Championship in 2023. During its seven seasons, however, the category was never very popular with the MotoGP fanbase.
The development of electric motorbikes has also stagnated within the motorbike industry. Instead, the focus has been on the development of sustainable fuels from non-fossil sources and even more efficient combustion engines for some time now. MotoGP will run 100% on e-fuels from the 2027 season. Since 2024, the focus has been on fuels with an e-fuel content of at least 40%.
MotoE World Championship to be paused
The situation is therefore clear for both FIM and Dorna: they are forced to put the world championship on ice for the time being after the 2025 season. However, the provisional end should not be final at the moment. FIM and MotoGP want to continue to keep an eye on the development of the industry. The aim is still to keep the sport at the centre of innovation. Should the relevance of electric motorbikes increase in the future, the MotoE situation will be reconsidered. Other alternatives have not been ruled out either.
FIM President Jorge Viegas commented on the decision and found clear words: "Despite all our efforts to promote the innovative category in cooperation with Dorna, we have to face the truth. We have not achieved our goals. Also, high-performance electric motorbikes are simply not associated with our industry. The racing was fantastic. I would like to thank all the riders and teams who competed in MotoE."
"MotoE played a crucial role in the mission of MotoGP"
Dorna Sports CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta also made a statement: "MotoE delivered some incredible moments on the track, crowning champions and winners. It played a crucial role in MotoGP's mission to innovate. They never shied away from staging something new. On and off the track, we continue to strive for innovation, but we also need to listen equally to our fanbase and the audience we are trying to connect with.
He continued: "Together with FIM, we have made the decision that the time is right to pause MotoE after the end of the 2025 season. We would like to thank all the riders and teams, Ducati, Michelin, all our partners and the staff who have made MotoE a reality since its inception in 2019. Thank you for accompanying us on this valuable journey."
But before the world championship comes to an abrupt end, we have an exciting season finale with two rounds to look forward to today. Everything is still wide open in the drivers' championship. There are only 18 points between the Italian Alessandro Zaccone in first place, who secured pole position in Portugal, and the Brazilian Eric Granado in fifth place. A race win gives 25 points, meaning that theoretically eight drivers could still become world champion.
