Extreme E team Rosberg X Racing disbands

After four years as part of the all-electric off-road series Extreme E, Rosberg X Racing will be disbanded at the end of the year. The German team of former Formula 1 world champion Nico Rosberg made the announcement on Friday. RXR secured two Extreme E championship titles and nine victories.

The reason for the withdrawal of the most successful team is restructuring - both in the series and with the team founder. From now on, Extreme will run its cars on hydrogen instead of battery-electric power. "Under the leadership of Nico Rosberg, RXR has always been strongly committed to e-mobility", the team's statement reads. This is no longer necessary with a switch to hydrogen."

More importantly, however, Rosberg himself also wants to focus on other projects in future - in particular his venture capital business. He will therefore not only end his involvement with RXR, but also with the "Greentech Festival".

"That is why I have made the difficult decision to withdraw from some of my other projects, which I value highly," writes Rosberg on LinkedIn. After retiring from Formula 1, I was not sure what would come next, but I wanted to pursue impactful projects. With Rosberg X Racing, I wanted to prove that motorsport can be a force for good."

"Together we raced with determination, won two out of three possible championships in Extreme E and campaigned for sustainability and equality on and off the track," Rosberg continued. "The emotions (especially after the first world championship win) and the impact we made exceeded anything I could have imagined after my F1 career. With the end of Extreme E, which is evolving into the FIA Extreme H World Cup, this is the best moment to close this chapter and end our involvement."

Rosberg X Racing remains the most successful team in Extreme E

"Even though it is bittersweet to close this chapter, I am proud of what we have achieved," Rosberg is quoted in the press release. After the premature end of the 2024 Extreme E season, Rosberg X Racing's journey came to an end with two fourth places at the Hydro X Prix in July.

Nonetheless, Rosberg is the most successful team after four years of Extreme E. With his two team-mates Molly Taylor and Mikaela Ahlin-Kottulinsky, WRX champion Johan Kristoffersson won two titles. This makes RXR the only team to celebrate two championships in Extreme E. They also secured nine race wins and several podium results.

"RXR has given me the opportunity to grow in a way I could never have imagined," says female driver Ahlin-Kottulinsky. "From our championship wins to planting thousands of trees and inspiring children, this journey has been unforgettable. I will also be forever grateful that I had the opportunity to learn alongside Johan, who is now a seven-time World Rallycross Champion. Even though I will miss the team, I am excited to see where the next chapter will take me."

"Winning two championships was an incredible achievement, but what stands out the most is the impact we have made beyond racing," adds Kristoffersson. "We were more than a racing team - we were a family, and I am grateful for all the great times we had."

At the end of the year, RXR will close its doors for good. The new year means a new start for Extreme E anyway, which will then contest its first season as Extreme H. More information on this is still to come.
