Gil de Ferran won the CART championship in North America in 2000 and 2001, and in 2003 he won the legendary Indianapolis 500-mile race. He later founded his own motorsports team and managed the sporting affairs of Formula One teams BAR (2005-2007) and McLaren (2018-2021).
De Ferran was an ambassador for Formula E in the early days of the racing series and co-founded Extreme E with Alejandro Agag in 2019. He got into the car himself for Andretti Autosport on one day during the 2014 pre-season test drives, but subsequently retired from his test driver role. He was initially active in Extreme E as chairman, but left the racing series again after a short time.
Gil de Ferran died on 29 December 2023 at the age of 56 after suffering a heart attack in Opa-locka, Florida.
