The German team ABT Sportsline is one of the founding teams of Formula E. With Lucas di Grassi, the team won the inaugural Formula E race in Beijing on September 13, 2014. In season 3, the Brazilian also won the drivers' title for ABT. The role of team principal was held by Hans-Jürgen Abt in the first three seasons. Before the fourth season, German carmaker Audi, which had been a partner of the private team since the first season (2014/15), took over the racing team completely and replaced Abt at the team helm with Allan McNish.

As a factory team, Audi clinched the championship title in the 2017/18 season at the first attempt despite some technical problems at the beginning of the season. In its fifth season, the team failed to defend the title - it finished second overall for the third time. In 2019/20, Audi experienced the weakest season in its history: At the end of the year it was only enough for 6th place in the team standings. The drivers also remained without a win for the first time. In addition, the Ingolstadt-based company made headlines with the dismissal of Daniel Abt, who had cheated in the "Race at Home Challenge." Abt was succeeded by DTM champion Rene Rast, who was also confirmed as a regular driver for the seventh season.

At the end of 2020, Audi surprisingly announced its factory withdrawal from Formula E at the end of the 2021 season. A buyback of the team by ABT failed. As a result, the team license went back to Formula E, and the grid of the electric racing series shrank to 22 cars in 2022. Audi nevertheless continued to supplyl its customer team Envision Racing with its powertrains in season 8.

After a year's Formula E break, ABT Sportsline returned to Formula E for the start of the Gen3 era - initially as a customer team of Mahindra Racing. Joining them is Spanish car manufacturer Cupra, which was responsible for the paintwork and, as title sponsor, also found its place in the team name "ABT Cupra Formula E". The team signed Robin Frijns and Nico Müller as drivers. After a difficult season, Frijns left the team again, with Lucas di Grassi returning to Kempten for 2024 instead.

Before the start of the eleventh season, ABT ended its collaboration with Mahindra, as well as its partnership with Cupra. Instead, the team became the works team of the new manufacturer Lola Yamaha. Nico Müller left the team and was replaced by Formula 2 driver Zane Maloney.
