McLaren entered Formula E for the start of the Gen3 era in 2023. The sports car manufacturer from Woking (United Kingdom) took over the Mercedes factory team and largely retained the structures of the championship-winning team. Supported by Saudi Arabian sponsors, the "Neom McLaren Formula E Team" competes as a Nissan customer team.
Jake Hughes and Rene Rast were signed as drivers for the team's debut season. After a mixed season, Rast left the team at the end of the season and was replaced by Sam Bird. At the Sao Paulo E-Prix in March 2024, Bird celebrated the first Formula E victory for the team, which nevertheless only finished the season in seventh place. Hughes left the team at the end of the season. Young driver Taylor Barnard, who had already deputised for the injured Bird at the races in Monaco and Berlin, was signed for the new season.
