The FIA World Motorsport Council confirmed the key data for the Gen4 Formula E cars at its meeting in Macau. From the 2026-27 season, the race cars in the Formula E World Championship will receive a significant boost in power and performance. Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds also revealed some interesting details about the new cars that were previously unknown.

The decisions taken at the meeting of the World Motorsport Council have now officially confirmed details that were already known from the tender for the suppliers of standardised parts. While Spark will continue to provide the chassis for the fourth generation, two new partners have been selected, Podium Advanced Technologies (batteries) and Bridgestone (tyres), who have not previously been active in Formula E.

The Gen4 car will have two different aerodynamic configurations: In addition to a package with low downforce, there will also be a configuration that generates high downforce. However, it is not yet known when which package will be used.

Permant all-wheel drive, plus power almost doubled

What is known, however: In Gen4, all-wheel drive will not only be available in Attack Mode or at the start, but always. At the same time, the maximum power output will be increased from 350 kW to 600 kW, while energy recovery (recuperation) will rise from the current 600 kW to 700 kW.

In addition to this information, Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds revealed further interesting details about the new car to the colleagues at Motorsport-Magazin.com: unlike the current version, it will once again be equipped with a rear wing, which was last seen in the electric series in the Gen1 era (2014 to 2018). In contrast, the Gen2 and Gen3 cars generated the majority of their downforce on the rear axle with the diffuser.

Rear wing & slick tyres: "Want to demonstrate the full performance"

But the all-weather tyres that Formula E has relied on since its first season for reasons of sustainability could also be a thing of the past from 2028, the third season of the new vehicles. Due to the performance of the vehicles, the racing series could then switch to real treadless dry tyres.

"Gen4 will be a massive step forward", describes Dodds. "At some point we will introduce slick tyres. We have achieved so many other positive changes in terms of sustainability. But the Gen4 cars will reach a point where we want to demonstrate the full performance of the cars. This is one of those areas where we can make small compromises and improve in other areas instead."

What exactly the Gen4 cars will look like is not yet known. It is assumed that the public will be able to take their first look at the new racing cars at the season finale in London at the end of July.
