"A super unfortunate scene": Porsche team-mates collide at the Monaco E-Prix

The Porsche Formula E Team had definitely imagined the first Monaco race to go differently. Pascal Wehrlein had secured fifth place on the grid in qualifying for Saturday's race, with team-mate Nico Müller starting directly behind him in sixth place, but a collision between the two destroyed the hopes of a good result for both drivers.

Both Porsche drivers started the race quite well. They were running in the midfield until lap 13, when they suddenly had a moment of shock: Müller drove into the rear of his team-mate. "I took a hit from behind and got a puncture as a result. That was the end of my race", described the German when asked by e-Formula.news. Wehrlein had to go into the garage to change his tyres and fell back as a result.

Müller had actually already anticipated such a situation: "I actually just tried to block off from behind and also left a gap in the places where it tends to bunch up. But there was much more congestion than anticipated", Müller explains to our microphone.

As the Swiss driver describes it, he was no longer able to avoid the collision with his team-mate. "I was already blocking on the inside and couldn't move over to the left. I hit him on the rear wheel. A super unfortunate scene."

He himself does not see the situation as a fight, but "simply the wrong time, in the wrong place, in a chaotic situation." After the puncture and Wehrlein falling back as a result, the German was unable to score any points for the team. He finished the race in 18th position and lost the championship lead to Mitch Evans. Despite a damaged front wing, Müller was at least able to score four points with 8th place in the end.

Focus on qualifying on Sunday

Müller is already looking ahead to Sunday, where he predicts a slightly less crazy race. "I think the package is good. We were fast in qualifying with 300 kW. With 350 kW something was missing - we will try to find that for tomorrow. But I think a little less chaos, a little more visibility, that would help. And that's why we're focussing on a good qualifying. We'll see what happens after that."

The third free practice session is already scheduled for 8:30 am on Sunday, with the race taking place at 3:05 pm (CEST).
