Shock news for all Maserati MSG Racing fans: Maximilian Günther will not be able to take part in Formula E's Misano E-Prix in just under two weeks' time (13/14 April). The German crashed on the podium after his convincing victory in Tokyo (see video below) and sprained his right wrist. A prominent driver could stand in for him in Italy.

The accident occurred at the end of the podium ceremony at the Tokyo E-Prix last Saturday. After the top three drivers had received their trophies, the obligatory champagne shower followed. Winner Günther first went to the right-hand side of the stage, turned round and then wanted to sprint to spray the representative of his team with champagne.

He slipped on the wet stage and fell down. With the champagne bottle in his left hand, he reflexively tried to break his fall with his right arm. Günther sprained his wrist in that process. While his champagne bottle rolled away - Oliver Rowland later picked it up for him - Günther jumped back to his feet and didn't let on.

Probably due to the adrenaline, he charmingly covered up the scene, laughed at himself and continued spraying champagne. The pain apparently only set in after the podium ceremony.

Accidents sometimes happen during the podium ceremony as well (2024 Tokyo E-Prix)

As e-Formula.news learnt exclusively from team sources on Monday morning, the sprain will make it impossible for Günther to compete in the double-header in Misano in eleven days' time. Although the 26-year-old is able to move his wrist to a limited extent, it will not be enough for the tight turn 2 on the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. This brings back memories of Robert Kubica, who was unable to return to Formula 1 for a similar reason following a hand injury.

Formula E comeback for Felipe Massa?

So Maserati MSG Racing will have to look for a replacement for its top driver, who has scored all 48 championship points for his team so far this season. According to our information, it has not yet been finalised who will replace Günther.

However, a sensation could be in the offing, as one possible candidate is former Formula 1 and Formula E driver Felipe Massa. The Brazilian drove for the Monaco-based team in seasons 5 and 6 and still maintains close contact.

Who Maserati MSG will field in the double race in Italy remains to be seen. A decision is expected this week.
