Formula E has organised 148 races in its first eleven seasons. The Mexico City E-Prix on 10 January 2026 will therefore be the 150th race in the history of the electric racing series. At an event in the Mexican capital, Chief Championship Officer Alberto Longo has now spoken about the racing series' plans for the future.
For the tenth time next year, Formula E will be held at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City. This will be the eleventh consecutive season in which the series has raced in Mexico: in the 2021 season, the series had to move to the Puebla circuit because the infrastructure in the capital was being used to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic. As a result, a temporary hospital was set up in the buildings at the race track, and racing events were out of the question at the time.
This makes Mexico City the second most visited city by Formula E in its eleven-year history, after the German capital Berlin. And if Longo has his way, this will continue to be the case in the future: "Honestly, we will be here in Mexico for many years to come," says the co-founder of Formula E at Pitlane Motor. The packed grandstands, especially in the former baseball stadium, make the race something very special for him. "If we were looking for the event of the year, there would be a handful of options: Mexico would definitely be there."
"The next race in Mexico will be the 150th race in the history of Formula E", the Spaniard continues. "In absolute terms, that is the equivalent of a major championship. Of course, we are still in our infancy, but it is still a remarkable number. And where better to celebrate it than here at home in Mexico?"
"A memorable date for us"
For this anniversary, Formula E wants to come up with something, Longo hints: "It's a memorable date for us. We will be doing one or two very special things. If someone had told me 14 years ago that we would have been around for so long, I probably wouldn't have believed it."
However, it is striking that all the races in Mexico City consisted of just one race. In many other cities, including Monaco in the meantime, Formula E holds double-headers with two race days on one weekend.
"Why should we destroy this special event that we have," says Longo, rejecting these plans out of hand. "Who can guarantee me that we can offer the same show and entertainment on race days as before? If someone really guarantees me that, we will race twice."
So anyway, a large number of these events would not fit in with the future plans of the racing series, which would like to add even more venues to its racing calendar - four to six cities in 2030, as he explained in an interview with e-Formula.news in July. He has now confirmed this again: "Gradually, Formula E wants to expand into other countries. This means that we would abolish 'double headers' and only organise single races."
Before the Mexico City E-Prix, however, the season opener for the 2025-26 Formula E season is still on the agenda, which will take place in Sao Paulo. Before that, the official pre-season tests will take place from 27 to 31 October at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia (Spain).
