Maloney promoted to 10th place! All Formula E penalties at the Tokyo E-Prix at a glance

At the Tokyo E-Prix, as at every race in the Formula E World Championship, the stewards of the International Automobile Federation (FIA) are responsible for ensuring compliance with the Technical and Sporting Regulations. Should they identify a breach, it is their responsibility to determine the penalty. As usual, this article provides a list of all the decisions made over the weekend.

At the 2026 Tokyo E-Prix, Chief Steward Gerd Ennser, International Steward Mathieu Remmerie and National Steward Hiroshi Matudo will take on this role. They will be supported in this by racing driver Jazeman Jaafar. The 33-year-old worked his way up through the junior series to Formula Renault 3.5, where he won the Monaco race from pole position in 2015 and finished eighth in the championship at the end of the season. He subsequently moved into endurance racing, where he enjoyed a number of successes in the LMP2 class.

Penalties during free practice on Friday and Saturday

• Zane Maloney was handed a 20-place grid penalty after the gearbox on his Lola Yamaha ABT was changed once again.
• Envision Racing was fined 2,500 euros because the tyre pressure on Sébastien Buemi’s car was below the minimum pressure specified by tyre manufacturer Hankook. Instead of 1.2 bar, the tyre pressure sensors on the Envision car measured just 1.176 bar.
• Porsche was fined 2,000 euros because Pascal Wehrlein had driven too fast in the pit lane during the second free practice session. Instead of the maximum permitted speed of 50 km/h, the German was clocked at 70 km/h. As the speed was so significantly over the limit, he was also given a penalty point.
• Jaguar was fined 900 euros after Mitch Evans was also found to have been driving too fast in the pit lane during the second free practice session. The New Zealander was travelling at 59 km/h.

Penalties during and after the qualifying on Saturday

• Jean-Eric Vergne was penalised with a three-place grid penalty for impeding Zane Maloney during group qualifying. However, as his race engineer had not informed him that Maloney was on a timed lap, he did not receive any penalty points for this incident.
• Citroen Racing was fined 1,700 euros because Jean-Eric Vergne was driving too fast in the pit lane during qualifying. The Frenchman was driving at 67 km/h, which was significantly over the speed limit, and so he also received a penalty point.
• Zane Maloney received a 10-second stop-and-go penalty because his grid penalty could not be fully enforced.

Penalties during and after the race on Saturday

• Sebastien Buemi received a reprimand for wheelspinning in the pit lane. This was Buemi’s second warning of the current season. A third warning would automatically result in a ten-place grid penalty.
• Sebastien Buemi received a five-second time penalty for causing a collision with Nyck de Vries. He was also given a penalty point on his racing licence.
• Norman Nato received a five-second time penalty for causing a collision with Pascal Wehrlein. He was also given a penalty point.
• Pascal Wehrlein received a ten-second time penalty for causing a collision with Antonio Felix da Costa. He was also given a penalty point.
• Sebastien Buemi was subsequently given a further five-second time penalty for causing a collision with Edoardo Mortara. This was converted into a three-place grid penalty for Sunday’s race, as he finished the race outside the top 10. He was also given a penalty point on his racing licence.
• Joel Eriksson was subsequently given a five-second time penalty for moving whilst decelerating, thereby causing a collision with Pepe Marti. This was converted into a three-place grid penalty for Sunday’s race, as he finished the race outside the top 10. He was also given a penalty point on his racing licence. Although the incident took place outside the actual braking zone, the stewards interpreted it as such because Eriksson had previously lifted and the difference in speed between the cars had the same effect as changing line whilst braking.

Penalties after qualifying on Sunday

• Felipe Drugovich was given a three-place grid penalty for impeding Sebastien Buemi during group qualifying. The Brazilian was also given a penalty point.

Penalties during and after the race on Sunday

• Felipe Drugovich was subsequently given a five-second time penalty for driving too fast during the full-course yellow. He reduced his speed to 50 km/h within two seconds. As Drugovich did not finish in the top ten, the penalty was converted into a three-place grid penalty for the first race of the London E-Prix. He was also awarded a further penalty point.
• Lucas di Grassi was also subsequently given a five-second time penalty for driving too fast under a red flag. He was clocked at 61 km/h instead of the maximum permitted 50 km/h. As he did not finish in the top ten, the penalty was converted into a three-place grid penalty for the first race of the London E-Prix. He was also given one penalty point.
• Edoardo Mortara was subsequently given a ten-second time penalty for causing a collision with Joel Eriksson. As Mortara also did not finish in the top ten, the penalty was converted into a five-place grid penalty for the first race of the London E-Prix. He was also given one penalty point.
• Jean-Eric Vergne received a reprimand for failing to turn into the pit lane when the red flag was displayed, instead coming to a halt on the start-finish straight. It was his second warning of the current season. The Frenchman was also given two penalty points.

• Sebastien Buemi was subsequently handed a five-second time penalty for causing a collision with Pepe Marti. This saw him drop from 7th to 16th place. He was also given a penalty point.

• The convertion of the time penalty for Felipe Drugovich to a grid drop for London was cancelled, because the Andretti driver was promoted to 10th place because of the penalty for Buemi. So he finished the race in P16 behind Buemi. Zane Maloney was promoted to 10th place instead.
