In Tokyo, the leading group in the World Championship battle for the drivers’ title has closed the gap once again. We are therefore set to witness a tight battle at the season finale in London, with just 14 points separating first and fourth place. Jake Dennis made the biggest leap forward in Japan. The Season 9 world champion finished on the podium twice, thereby taking the lead in the championship. In memory of their late team principal, Citroen Racing also delivered a performance that would have made Cyril Blais proud!

Jake Dennis | Andretti | 9.4

In Tokyo, Jake Dennis had already come close to victory in both races. On Sunday, he was eliminated early in qualifying, but a risky strategy involving tyre pressure on a drying track paid off in the race. He was in the best position to take the win, but was stopped by a red flag. On Saturday, however, he had the race in the bag, at least until the final corners, where Dan Ticktum managed to overtake him after all.

In the end, there may not have been a winner’s trophy, but the points haul was enormous! The Briton picked up 37 points in Tokyo alone, thereby taking the lead in the World Championship. Furthermore, his points haul with the Porsche powertrain played a decisive role in Porsche’s early title win in the manufacturers’ championship. Ever since Formula E came to Asia, the Brit has been unstoppable!

Nick Cassidy | Citroen Racing | 9.0

It was clear to see just how much Citroen were determined to achieve the best possible result in memory of Cyril Blais. This made the usually level-headed Nick Cassidy all the more emotional on Saturday as he stood on the podium. Little did he know then that his Sunday would be even better and that he would be back on the podium in second place. The New Zealander drove like a man possessed, having managed to score just two points in the six races prior. Let’s hope this race weekend marks the start of a new run of form for Cassidy!

Dan Ticktum | Cupra Kiro | 8.0

So far this season, Ticktum has had to watch his team-mate outshine him. In Tokyo, he has finally shown why he has been the team’s first-choice driver for years! On Saturday, he drove a perfect race. Instead of acting rashly, he shone with patience. It was only in the final corners that he made his move to catch Dennis off guard and clinch the race win, even though he’d been right on his tail for many laps beforehand. On Sunday he was just as quick, but the strategy of using the wrong tyre pressure on his car made a good result impossible.

E-Prix "flop": Joel Eriksson | Envision Racing | 5.2

In fact, there wasn’t really a flop at the Tokyo E-Prix. Looking at both races together, no driver’s performance was so poor that he could be described as a flop. Joel Eriksson simply had the misfortune of receiving the most mediocre marks and now has to bring up the rear. His race weekend was below par by his standards, but not disastrous. The collision with Mortara in the second race was unfortunate, but it wasn’t his fault. However, a better qualifying result than last place would probably have spared him this situation.
