Since 2021, Formula E has been visiting the unique circuit at the ExCeL exhibition centre in London. The venue offers the only indoor and outdoor race on the Formula E calendar. Since season 9, the London E-Prix has also been the setting for the season finale. However, Formula E seems to be outgrowing the ExCeL more and more, so the new 1-year contract also points to the end of an era.
London will also host the final in season 12
London has hosted a number of great races and has also crowned world champions. Last year's races, in which Pascal Wehrlein turned the tide furiously and was crowned champion ahead of Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy, remain in the memory. Formula E is certain that next year's final race will also be held at the ExCeL.
Alberto Longo, Chief Championship Officer and Formula E co-founder, is looking forward to working with the exhibition centre: "The unique track conditions and event space offer fans and drivers the best of our sport by bringing together the best racing and entertainment in a truly unique venue."
Gen3 Evo likely to be the final era for the ExCeL
Before the season, there were already some rumours and speculations that the track would have to make way in the future. The change is clear to see: Formula E wants longer straights and faster tracks to showcase the Gen3 Evo. Recently, the layout of the Berlin E-Prix also changed considerably. However, as the London ExCeL is not located on an airfield, but uses pretty much every metre that is available, the track will not be able to undergo any changes.
A particularly persistent rumour was that Formula E wanted to visit Silverstone in the future. This would mean another permanent race track on the racing calendar and the roots of the metropolitan racing series would continue to disappear. The Gen3 Evo car is now expected to complete four more races at ExCeL before the even more powerful Gen4 era begins.
But before Formula E visits London on 26 and 27 July, there are still a few more races to come. Next up is a "double-header" in the Principality of Monaco on 3 and 4 May!
