It was the first major upset in an eventful Saturday Formula E race in Monaco: there was a three-way collision between Antonio Felix da Costa, Edo Mortara and David Beckmann on the final corner. While the latter two drivers were able to continue, Felix da Costa retired - and was frustrated.
"I felt that I went onto the inside lane and he turned into the corner as if I didn't exist. I had no more space and couldn't do anything. It just sucks that we're out", Felix da Costa summarised the scene shortly after his retirement - visibly dejected.
Mortara tried to assess the situation neutrally: "Going into the last corner with two cars was not a good idea. It's difficult for me to judge. He tried it on the inside, I myself was on the inside of David. Then there was the contact. The contact almost caused me to lose my front wing", he explains to e-Formula.news.
"I'm sorry for Antonio", he says conciliatory words in the direction of the Porsche driver, for whom it didn't go any further. "But there is simply no room for so many cars at this point. A crash like this was bound to happen at some point."
Beckmann grumbles about Mortara: "Completely overestimated himself"
While the Mahindra driver agrees with the stewards' judgement - not to penalise anyone - David Beckmann sees things a little differently: "In my eyes, Edo overestimated himself in the fight with Antonio and braked too late", he says at e-Formula.news. "He crashed into me, and I then crashed into the wall - and my front wing was broken."
"Edo finished fourth, but I don't understand why. I don't even know if the FIA does anything about it - apparently it doesn't matter," he grumbles. Regardless of this situation, Beckmann subsequently received a drive-through penalty, which was converted into a time penalty of 33 seconds. The Kiro driver had fallen short of the minimum standing time of 34 seconds at the Pit Boost pit stop. He therefore dropped from 15th to 17th place.
On Sunday, the drivers will have another chance to do better. Race 7 of the season is already just around the corner.
