Before the Monaco E-Prix, very few experts would have predicted that Sebastien Buemi would win the race. But the 36-year-old pulled off the sensation and won in challenging conditions in the Principality. The astonishing statistics generated by his success also make him sentimental.
Not since the 2019 New York City E-Prix almost six years ago has Buemi stood at the top of the Formula E podium. The Swiss driver ended a drought of 80 races and celebrated his 14th victory in the electric series. He is now once again the sole record holder in this statistic. Lucas di Grassi and Mitch Evans currently have 13 race wins each.
Two more exciting statistics: Buemi had previously been the only driver with two Formula E victories in Monaco, now he even has three to his name. He is also only the third driver ever to pass the 1,000-point mark in the electric series (to the all-time leaderboard).
"I actually thought that numbers didn't mean that much to me, but they do", admits Buemi after the race to our TV colleagues from ServusTV. "I thought I would probably never win again. It's almost hard for me to talk - it's been so long since I won a race. And then to win here is incredible. I didn't make a mistake today and I'm very proud."
Someone else is probably proud too: Buemi revealed that his parents were watching the Monaco E-Prix live at the race track. "My parents only come once a year - that was very special."
1st Envision win in almost 2 years
His team, Envision Racing, will also be proud to have won a Formula E race for the first time since the 2023 season finale in London. "It's good for morale and for the team - but also for me," admits Buemi. "We needed a bit of luck. We needed the right moment and the right car. I am speechless."

He won Sunday's race in Monaco also thanks to a clever strategy: "Of course it was difficult, especially in the beginning with Antonio (Felix da Costa) and Max (Günther). But the timing of our Attack Mode was good, so I was able to pull out a gap. So I was safe when Oliver (Rowland) took his second (Attack Mode). I was able to read and feel the track well where it was already drier - and simply drive faster."
After scoring a meagre six points in the first six races of the season, Buemi increased his championship tally to 31 points and climbed to tenth place overall. Envision left last place in the teams' standings and is now eighth. The Jaguar customer team also catapulted the "big cat" to third place in the manufacturers' championship.
