A move by former Formula 1 runner-up Sergio Perez to Formula E is becoming more likely. His father once again brought "Checo" into the conversation during the Mexico race weekend. However, Chief Championship Officer Alberto Longo clarified that the decision to sign him up ultimately lies with the teams.

At the award ceremony of the Mexico City E-Prix last Saturday, another familiar face was seen on the podium alongside the three successful drivers: Antonio Perez Garibay, father of Sergio Perez, presented a trophy. During the race weekend, he also pursued his own interests and got his son talked about in the media.

"I never really imagined Formula E, but careful: we could see Checo Perez driving here", he said in an interview with the Spanish-language medium Estadio Deportes. "Of course, that wouldn't be a problem at all"

After his F1 retirement from Red Bull, Checo's future in motorsport is still uncertain. He currently no longer finds a place in the "premier class" and has announced that he will talk about his future in six months. That would probably still be too early for an F1 comeback. Is Perez now focussing on Formula E?

"The series has been around for eleven years. Although it is very young, it is already number 2 in the world today - and in the next five years it will be number 1", his father is certain. "That's why I'm here - I'm looking forward to what comes next."

Always in touch with Formula E

It is well known that Perez is not entirely averse to the electric series. The 34-year-old was already open to Formula E in 2019. Almost exactly a year ago, Formula E co-founder Alberto Longo also spoke out. He is constantly in talks with Perez, the Spaniard told AS media at the time: "The doors are open for him and he is welcome."

After Papa Perez's latest statements, however, Longo clarified once again at Estadio Deportes: "I also say that it is not the decision of the organisers of the championship, i.e. ours, but rather his decision and that of the teams. Because ultimately they decide who sits in each of their cars."

There is no question that Perez would be an asset to Formula E - especially in view of the Mexico City E-Prix, which is always full of atmosphere anyway.

However, the electric series is still likely to be one of the most attractive programmes for Perez, especially as the Mexican has been successful particularly in monoposto racing, and Formula E is becoming increasingly powerful. "Maybe Formula E will be much bigger when I'm done with Formula 1 - that would make it very interesting", said Perez around six years ago.
