It took Dan Ticktum 60 races and a lot of patience to finally achieve his first Formula E victory in Jakarta on Saturday. The "bad boy" of the electric series was emotional after the race and made some striking and ruthlessly honest statements with entertainment value - as you would expect from him. After "a few thousand beers" in Tokyo, the aim this time is to crack the million mark.
Tears were already flowing for Kiro team principal Alex Hui in the pits shortly after Ticktum crossed the finish line. He could hardly believe his luck - the first victory for the team in more than ten years, when Nelson Piquet Jr. won in Moscow in season 1. Race winner Ticktum was similarly emotional on the podium. He could hardly hold back the tears during the British national anthem. "I have a lot of emotions inside me, I am really very happy."
At the press conference afterwards, he gave free rein to his feelings - at least to a large extent: "I always wonder how much I should filter what I say. Unfortunately, I have to do that, even if there are a few things I would like to say", Ticktum elaborated.
"I have faced a lot of doubt and hate over the last few years. People with short-term memory issues tend to forget that I have achieved quite a few things on my way up the ladder. I think a lot of people have forgotten how close I was to Formula 1. It's difficult to say without sounding arrogant, but I am where I feel I should be."
Ticktum climbs to 5th place in the world championship
The first victory for Ticktum in an FIA World Championship was not only satisfying for the 26-year-old, but also the end of a long dry spell. "The first three seasons in Formula E were very tough for me," he explains. "I found it difficult to stay motivated. In the beginning (of the season) we still had our difficulties adapting to the new package with the new powertrain, but the team did a remarkable job. I am very proud of the team."

From the Miami E-Prix onwards, things went better for Kiro and Ticktum: two seventh places were followed by four double-digit points finishes in the last six races, including a third place and now a win. Since then, the Briton has scored 74 of his now 80 championship points, moving himself up to fifth place in the drivers' standings and his team to eighth place overall. "It's a shame that we didn't score more points at the start of the season, because otherwise I might now be in a good position in the championship - something I wouldn't even have thought about before", says Ticktum.
"A great platform where I can be myself"
"Before the season, our goal was a podium. After Japan, a few people asked me if a win was on the cards. To be honest, I didn't believe it", he says and explains: "In Formula E, many things have to come together (to win), and we don't have the very best car, even if it is good." Nevertheless, Ticktum has established himself in the top group of Formula E in recent months and regularly fights for trophies.
He is simply happy about his current situation. "This season is better than I had hoped for. The team and Formula E have just given me a great platform where I can be myself. I am really enjoying this season and hopefully this is the place where I can continue for the next decade or so and have a good career."
After his first podium in Tokyo, Ticktum had announced he was going to drink "a million" beers. Asked about his victory celebrations in Jakarta, he says: "To be honest, I was too tired after the (first) podium and only had a few thousand (beers), if I remember correctly. Today I feel a bit more alive, so maybe we can make the million tonight."
