DS Penske narrowly misses out on 1-2 win after notes - The e-Formula.news driver rating for the 2025 Shanghai E-Prix

Tim Neuhaus

Shanghai offered two very different Formula E race days. On Saturday, we saw a day on which Maximilian Günther was simply unbeatable, a five-way battle for the remaining podium places and Jean-Eric Vergne's surprise manoeuvre in the final corners, which led to the first DS Penske one-two victory. Sunday did not shine with much track time due to the rain. But when the race actually took place, Nick Cassidy dominated the field and showed his huge potential for the first time this season!

After each round of Formula E Season 11, our editors award points on a scale between 1 and 10 for all drivers. They are then sorted according to their average "rating score". The rating is based exclusively on driving performance, not the potential of the car or external circumstances.

Maximilian Günther | DS Penske | 8.6

Curiously, Maximilian Günther is becoming indomitable on seemingly random race days in Asia. The German has celebrated four pole positions so far, all of them in Asia. In Saturday's race in Shanghai, he drove more energy-efficiently than the competition, made no mistakes and kept a cool head until the final phase. He was also the fastest man overall in China. The German even managed to get past the actual dominator Oliver Rowland without any problems and won with a solid gap. He retired on Sunday through no fault of his own, otherwise he would probably have scored points there too.

Nick Cassidy | Jaguar TCS Racing | 8.0

Nick Cassidy had experienced a disastrous season up until the weekend. Most likely so disastrous that the New Zealander will part ways with Jaguar at the end of the season. This made his very strong race weekend in China all the more surprising - especially compared to his team-mate Mitch Evans. He secured a good fourth place on the grid in the first race, but was then involved in a racing accident with Vergne and Edo Mortara. This crash robbed him of any chance of scoring points and he finished behind the field.

On Sunday, however, we witnessed a masterful drive, as he gave us so often last season. In qualifying without the duel phase, he was almost half a second faster than the second-best driver and secured his first participation in the duels and his first pole position in season 11. In the race, he left nothing to chance and drove to race victory by a huge margin, but above all without any mistakes.

Jean-Eric Vergne | DS Penske | 8.0

Jean-Eric Vergne scored points in both races, meaning that he and Maximilian Günther collected 28 points. However, the Frenchman was not only very consistent, but also drove with the necessary assertiveness for which he is known. His overtake in the final corners on Saturday stood out in particular, when he overtook both Dan Ticktum and Taylor Barnard on the brakes - a manoeuvre worthy of a two-time champion!

Flop of the E-Prix: Mitch Evans | Jaguar TCS Racing | 3.4

Mitch Evans' Shanghai weekend was perhaps cursed from the start. In Saturday's race, he started at the back of the field due to numerous technical problems and served a stop-and-go penalty on the first lap. Evans was unable to find his rhythm and spent both races in no man's land. A weak race weekend with no clear obvious will to change that. His team-mate Cassidy proved that there was pace in the car.
