"Extremely unfortunate" - Günther explains Cassidy crash, which also ended his Sunday race prematurely

Max Günther was also unable to finish the second Formula E race in London. After his gearbox failure on Saturday, he slid into the rear of Nick Cassidy's damaged Jaguar one day later, which - surprisingly for Günther - slowed down to turn into the pit lane. However, in what was supposedly his last race for Maserati, a maximum of 5th place was possible anyway.

After Max Günther was unfortunate to finish second in the first race of the London E-Prix with a technical defect, the German was also unable to finish Sunday's race. On lap 18, he crashed into the rear of Jaguar driver Nick Cassidy, who was trying to turn into the pits with a puncture.

"I didn't see that Nick had a puncture from the fight with Antonio (Felix da Costa)," explained Günther to e-Formula.news. "I opted for the inside lane because that's always the safe option when you see two people fighting in front of you. But then Nick unfortunately tried to turn into the pits, which I couldn't have known. That was extremely unfortunate."

So it clattered into the last corner of the circuit, with Cassidy spinning slightly. However, Günther suffered the greater damage to his car: "I was no longer able to decelerate sufficiently and damaged my front wing. It slipped under my car and broke the suspension. Then the race was over for me."

"No pace at all" in what was supposed to be the last race for Maserati

Up until then, it had looked like a good points finish for Günther - despite a clear performance deficit compared to the race on Saturday, when Maserati according to Günther had "the fastest car in the field". "We had a lot of understeer and I had no pace at all."

"Also with the attack modes, we were in a very difficult situation this race," he adds, but says: "Nevertheless, we worked our way forwards well. Fifth or sixth place was probably the best we could have achieved today. But then I was in the wrong place at the wrong time."

All in all, Günther's second season with Maserati was mixed to positive. His victory in Tokyo was a notable highlight - the only success for a Stellantis car last season. He also claimed another podium and finished eighth in the drivers' championship. He also lost out on a safe second place on the London Saturday.

According to a report by The Race, it was Günther's last race with Maserati. He is said to have signed a multi-year contract with DS Penske and swapped the cockpit with Stoffel Vandoorne. Günther did not want to comment on the subject when asked by e-Formula.news.
