The FIA World Motorsport Council approved various rule changes for the upcoming 2025/26 Formula E World Championship at its meeting on Thursday. In addition to the attack mode, these also affect the qualifying format and the financial regulations for teams and manufacturers in the electric series.

The FIA has approved minor changes to the Sporting Regulations: The qualifying sessions will be revised to make the format even more spectator-friendly. The time for group qualifying will be reduced from twelve to ten minutes. In addition, the long breaks between the duels will be shortened. Objective: In future, qualifying should only take about an hour.

Attack mode: Only one activation for races with Pit Boost

The rules for the attack mode have been adapted; in pit boost races, there is now only one attack mode per driver, while in races without the pit stop with fast charging, there are still two activations of the additional power with four-wheel drive. In addition, the obligation to complete the entire Attack Mode time by the end of the race has been abolished.

Both rule changes have been the subject of speculation for around a month. In particular, the time penalties imposed on drivers who had not made full use of attack mode had been criticised. For example, Norman Nato, who crossed the finish line first at the Miami E-Prix, lost his victory and was only classified in sixth place.

There has also been an adjustment to the Formula E financial regulations: in future, maternity and paternity pay of teams and manufacturers will generally be excluded from the cost cap. The aim is to ensure that the teams can provide their employees with comprehensive support during important life events without jeopardising their competitiveness. The racing series thus emphasises its commitment to a fairer, more diverse and more inclusive environment.
