Antonio Felix da Costa finishes the 2nd free practice session in Berlin as the fastest. Jean-Eric Vergne and Felipe Durgovich completed the top three in a rather uneventful practice session on Saturday morning. The slowest was reigning world champion Oliver Rowland.
After the 1st free practice session had already taken place on Friday afternoon at the Tempelhof circuit in Berlin, the action continued on Saturday morning with the 2nd free practice session. The drivers took to the track at 9.30 a.m. (CEST) for 40 minutes in warm 23-degree temperatures.
The first lap times under one minute came after seven minutes of driving. However, the times were still around two seconds behind the best time set by Taylor Barnard the previous day. The first to come close to Barnard's lap time from Friday afternoon was Envision driver Sebastien Buemi, who set a lap time of 0:57.931 minutes.
Felix da Costa took the lead of the field with his 350kW activation with a lap time of 0:57.680 minutes. However, the Portuguese driver then described an unusual noise in his car.
Pepe Marti was able to fight his way into the top three with 19 minutes left on the clock. With a time of 0:58.173 minutes, he then found himself behind Felix da Costa and Buemi. This was followed by an improvement from the two Mahindra drivers, who were then followed by Dan Ticktum, who took over the top 3 positions. Jean-Eric Vergne went one better and topped the field with a lap time of 0:57.530 minutes.
Felix da Costa improves track record
The first driver to beat Taylor Barnard's best time from Friday was Felix da Costa in the Jaguar. The Portuguese took the lead of the field after 30 minutes of driving with a lap time of 0:57.357 minutes. Vergne had also beaten Friday's best time, completing the lap three hundredths of a second faster than Barnard on Friday.
Eight minutes before the end of the session, race control showed Dennis a caution for obstructing another driver, shortly afterwards Felix da Costa was also shown the black and white flag. Wehrlein touched the wall with his right rear wheel on the final lap, but was still able to complete the lap.
Felix da Costa finished the race fastest, Vergne and Drugovich completed the top three, with Barnard, Müller, Mortara, Dennis, Ticktum, Nato and de Vries completing the top 10. The two Porsche drivers Müller and Wehrlein finished the second free practice session in 11th and 14th place respectively.
Qualifying continues at the track here at the former Berlin Tempelhof Airport at 11:40 am (CEST).
