Jake Hughes was the fastest driver in the 2nd free practice session in Mexico City. In a dynamic session with a wet track, the Maserati driver beat his Jaguar rival Nick Cassidy by a good 1.5 tenths of a second just moments before the end. The top five was completed by three Porsche drivers: Pascal Wehrlein, Jake Dennis and Antonio Felix da Costa.

In contrast to the previous day, the second free practice session began on a wet track, although it was no longer raining. Accordingly, the track offered little grip. The few spectators in the grandstands saw numerous slides in the first few minutes. David Beckmann was one of the first to misjudge his braking in turn 1. Former world champion Jake Dennis did the same and spun in the run-off zone. Sebastien Buemi also had a wild drift in the "Peraltada" because he strayed from the drier racing line.

The first ten minutes belonged to the two DS Penske drivers. Max Günther led the field ahead of team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne as well as Jake Hughes and Stoffel Vandoorne in the two sister Maserati cars - Stellantis apparently with a similar strategy. However, the lap times were still a full 23 seconds off the track record due to the low grip level.

After a quarter of an hour, Hughes was the first driver ever to use four-wheel drive in an official session in the wet. However, he made a major mistake in the stadium and remained third. Apart from various slides, not much happened in Mexico. Despite Attack Mode, there were no improvements for a long time. Shortly after the halfway point of the session, the sun came out for the first time, which also had an effect on the grip in the coming minutes.

Drying track gets faster

Twelve minutes before the end, the lead changed hands again for the first time: Jake Dennis undercut Günther by six tenths of a second. Brand colleague Pascal Wehrlein did not quite match his time, but climbed into second place. The two Nissan drivers also moved up into the Top 5. There were numerous further improvements in the final ten minutes. Vergne set the next fastest time, followed by Wehrlein a good three minutes before the end. The German was almost 1.5 seconds faster than everyone else!

Nick Cassidy was another six tenths of a second faster on his final attempt! Wehrlein tried to counterattack, but only managed to get within two tenths of a second of the Jaguar driver. After the time had expired, however, Jake Hughes came in and secured the session win with a strong lap (1:25.808 minutes)! Dennis and Antonio Felix da Costa completed the top 5.

Qualifying at the Mexico City E-Prix takes place on Saturday afternoon at 16:40 (CET). As usual, e-Formula.news will follow the session in the live ticker. The race in Mexico starts on Saturday evening at 9pm (CET).
