Formula E in Mexico: Mitch Evans wins 2nd free practice ahead of Max Günther, Jaguar with strong pace

Jaguar driver Mitch Evans won the 2nd Formula E free practice session in Mexico. Second was Max Günther in the Maserati. Behind him were mainly Jaguar cars - a good start to the season for the manufacturer. The best Porsche driver, Jake Dennis, finished ninth in the Andretti customer car.

Nothing worth mentioning happened in the first few minutes of the opening session on Saturday. Robin Frijns initially led the field. Then champion Jake Dennis made a small braking error and had to take the emergency exit behind turn 1. The same thing happened a little later to his compatriot Sam Bird in the McLaren. After ten minutes, Nico Müller took the lead and was already almost as fast as the best time from the previous day (1:14.364 minutes).

Stoffel Vandoorne had to contend with difficulties. His DS Penske was pushed through the pit lane a little later, apparently without any propulsion of its own. Bird again misjudged turn 9 and had to skip the chicane. The same happened to Max Günther, who returned to the track in good order after a brief stop. Towards the halfway point of the 30-minute session, Jake Dennis set the fastest lap time so far this year.

Sette Camara kisses the wall

A good ten minutes before the end, Mitch Evans and Oliver Rowland set the first 1:13 times. However, the laps were still a long way off the track record (1:12.595 minutes). In turn 14, double yellow was briefly waved. The reason: Sergio Sette Camara had skidded in the right-hand bend and hit the TecPro barrier slightly with the front end. He damaged his front wing, but was able to free himself.

Dennis drove too fast into the double right-hander into Turn 5/6 and went wide - this was exactly where he had thrown away a possible pole position a year ago due to a mistake. A few minutes before the end, Evans was still in the lead ahead of Envision driver Frijns and Nick Cassidy. Strong pace from the Jaguar cars, especially as Sebastien Buemi was fifth at this point. Vandoorne - meanwhile back in action - split the Jaguar quartet in fourth.

Now it was once again all about the best time for many drivers. Jake Hughes slightly touched the wall with his right rear. Günther climbed up to second place, but nobody was able to match Evans' best time - session victory for the "Kiwi". Frijns, Cassidy and Vandoorne completed the top five. Qualifying will take place on Saturday afternoon at 4:40 pm (CET). The race start at the Mexico City E-Prix is scheduled for 9 pm.
