Taylor Barnard was the fastest in the 2nd free practice session in Miami. The McLaren Formula E youngster set a new lap record, leaving Antonio Felix da Costa (Porsche) and Nyck de Vries (Mahindra) behind. Nico Müller (Andretti) had to retire early from the session after crashing into the wall.
The only practice session of Saturday got underway on time in the Miami morning sun. Nothing remarkable happened in the first five minutes. The two Lola drivers topped the timesheets, while 18 of the 22 drivers gradually approached each other. The next driver to set the fastest lap was FP1 winner Nick Cassidy, followed by Jake Dennis. Mitch Evans, Oliver Rowland and Stoffel Vandoorne completed the top five in the first quarter of the session.
In the next few minutes, the two McLaren cars came up trumps. Taylor Barnard led the field midway through the session with a new track record, closely followed by his team-mate and compatriot Sam Bird - before both were separated by the Mahindra drivers. Then came the first accident of the weekend: Nico Müller did not get the entrance to the chicane right and crashed into the wall with the front end. He damaged the nose of his Andretti car in the process. Race control waved the red flag due to the debris on the track.

After a few minutes of interruption, the session continued - initially with 16 minutes left on the clock, but the stewards added a little "stoppage time" a little later. While the Andretti garage was feverishly working on Müller's car, Dan Ticktum almost suffered the same fate. However, the Kiro driver drove straight ahead in the chicane and thus avoided a collision. Antonio Felix da Costa in the Porsche improved to second place before the final ten minutes began.
Now several drivers tried their hand at attack mode with the full power of 350 kW. Evans moved up to third place, while David Beckmann was just able to catch his car after the fast turn 1. Nyck de Vries then made a leap and displaced Evans from third place, but apart from that there were hardly any notable improvements. Only Jean-Eric Vergne had a spectacular spin in turn 1, meaning that Barnard won the second free practice session ahead of Felix da Costa and de Vries. World champion Pascal Wehrlein was only ninth.
The Miami E-Prix continues with qualifying on Saturday afternoon at 3.40pm (CEST). The race starts at 8pm CEST.
