Pascal Wehrlein topped the timesheets in the second free practice session. In the sweltering heat, there were once again a number of drivers who braked too late, as well as a minor collision between Oliver Rowland and Antonio Felix da Costa. The top five was rounded off by Edoardo Mortara, Jake Dennis, Nyck de Vries and Dan Ticktum.

The second free practice session for the Sanya E-Prix began at 8.30 am local time (2.30 am CEST). Despite the clouds, it was once again sweltering hot in the morning, with very high humidity. The drivers took to the track in temperatures of around 30 °C.

Pit lane traffic lights cause confusion

There was a brief moment of confusion at the start, as although the green flag was displayed on the timing screen, the traffic lights at the pit lane exit were still showing red. The misunderstanding was quickly cleared up, allowing the riders to finally head out and continue their preparations for today’s race. There was an immediate rush onto the track, with virtually all riders heading out of their garages.

Initially, it was once again both Mahindra drivers who led the field. Both Porsche drivers were also back in contention at the front. Even yesterday, it was noticeable that some drivers kept overbraking and had to take the escape route. This was also evident in today’s session, for example with Dan Ticktum, who braked too late at Turn 9.

Around 15 minutes after the start of the session, it was Edoardo Mortara who led the field with a time of 1:07.418 minutes. Shortly afterwards, light rain was reported in the pit lane, whilst track action slowed down for a few minutes. However, the weather did not seem to have any effect on lap times.

Rowland and Felix da Costa collide

Most drivers spent only a few minutes in their garages. Around 20 minutes before the end of the session, track action picked up again. Meanwhile, there was a minor incident between reigning world champion Oliver Rowland and Antonio Felix da Costa. Rowland lost control of his Nissan and skidded into the side of Felix da Costa’s car. However, the minor contact had no consequences for either of them.

Alongside both Mahindras and the Porsches, both Andretti drivers once again made their mark. With around ten minutes to go, it was Dennis who moved into first place with a time of 1:05.381 minutes, before Mortara managed to beat that time. Dennis’s team-mate Felipe Drugovich was in fifth place. Ticktum remained in last place following his braking error at the start of the session. Shortly afterwards, however, he turned things around and moved up to fifth place.

Wehrlein sets fastest time

With just a few minutes to go, the battle for the fastest times resumed. The drivers used their final laps to prepare for qualifying. Wehrlein finished the session as the fastest with a time of 1:05.095 minutes. Mortara, Dennis, de Vries and Ticktum made up the top five.

Apart from a few brief yellow flags caused by run-off zone incidents and a minor collision between Rowland and Felix da Costa, the second free practice session ended without any major incidents. Qualifying gets underway at 4.40 am (CEST) and can be followed on our live ticker.
