Formula E in Tokyo: Edoardo Mortara also fastest in the second free practice session, Drugovich crashes!

The second free practice session for the Tokyo E-Prix began on Saturday of the race weekend, right on time at 1.30 pm local time. In contrast to the rainy Friday, the track was dry, with ideal weather conditions.

As soon as the green flag was waved, all the drivers immediately headed out onto the track. As the first free practice session had taken place exclusively in wet conditions, this was the first opportunity for the teams to gather data on a dry track.

Drugovich triggers first red flag

After just over five minutes, the session came to a premature end for Felipe Drugovich. The Brazilian lost control of his Andretti at Turn 16 and crashed heavily into the barriers. The front-left, front-right and rear-right suspension components were severely damaged. The crash brought out the first red flag of the day.

Following the heavy impact, it is doubtful whether Andretti will be able to bring both cars in qualifying. Team principal Roger Griffiths confirmed that both the battery and the powertrain on Drugovich’s car needs to be replaced.

After a break of around ten minutes, the practice session was resumed. To give the drivers back at least some of the lost practice time, race control extended the session by five minutes.

Mortara strong again – but later also ended up in the barriers

Edoardo Mortara had already finished Friday’s first free practice session under floodlights and in the rain with a fastest time of 1:13.094 minutes. The Mahindra driver continued his strong form on Saturday as well.

After the interruption, Mortara initially set the first benchmark with a lap time of 1:14.587 minutes. However, this was beaten shortly afterwards by Joel Eriksson in the Envision with a time of 1:13.657 minutes.

Mortara’s response was not long in coming, however. Around 20 minutes before the end of the session, the Swiss driver set a new fastest time of 1:12.491 minutes, significantly closing in on Oliver Rowland’s circuit record (1:12.007 minutes).

The joy was short-lived, however: shortly after setting his fastest time, Mortara also lost control of his car and collided lightly with the track barriers, sustaining suspension damage in the process.

His team-mate had also made contact with the wall earlier. Following a collision with the barriers, he was forced to retire his Mahindra early due to suspension damage.

The top 10 in the second free practice session are rounded off by Mortara, Tiktum, Wehrlein, Müller, Dennis, Evans, Günther, Cassidy, Da Costa and Barnard. Action continues at 8.40 am CEST with the first qualifying session in Tokyo.
