In the second qualifying session of the Formula E race weekend in Monaco, Cupra Kiro driver Dan Ticktum secured his second pole position in a row in Monaco. The Briton made second-placed Antonio Felix da Costa look pale in the final duel. Mahindra's Edoardo Mortara will start Sunday's race from third on the grid, Jean-Eric Vergne is forth.
Group A: Nyck de Vries shines in Group A
In Group A of the Sunday qualifying session, the two Mahindra drivers Edoardo Mortara and Nyck de Vries started together with Mitch Evans, Nico Müller, Jake Dennis, Sebastien Buemi, Dan Ticktum, Felipe Drugovich, Norman Nato and Lucas di Grassi.
The drivers started on time at 10:40 am local time. Buemi's rear end broke out briefly at the start, but all the drivers started without any major problems. The group was led for the longest time by Ticktum with a time of 1:28.492 minutes, followed by Nato, Evans and Drugovich in the top 4. In the end, Mortara improved once again and secured the second-fastest time. This allowed Ticktum, Mortara, Evans and Drugovich to secure their place in the duels.
For Nato, Müller, Dennis, de Vries, Buemi and di Grassi, qualifying ended in the group phase of qualifying.
Group B: Taylor Barnard fastest in Group B
The two DS Penske drivers Taylor Barnard and Maximilian Günther fought for their progression into the duels in Group B, together with Pascal Wehrlein, Oliver Rowland, Nick Cassidy, Antonio Felix da Costa, Pepe Marti, Joel Eriksson, Jean-Eric Vergne and Zane Maloney.
They also took their time setting faster lap times in the second group of qualifying. Wehrlein was the first to set a slightly faster time, but was relegated to eighth place shortly afterwards when other drivers also improved their times. Rowland took the lead towards the end of the group phase with a time of 1:28.765 minutes, followed by Barnard, Felix da Costa and Vergne. Wehrlein found some time at the end, but an improvement by Marti pushed the German out of the top four and thus prevented the Porsche driver from progressing into the duels. Barnard was also able to improve his time on his final lap and took the lead of the group. This meant that he, Rowland, Vergne and Felix da Costa went on to qualify.
Marti, Günther, Wehrlein, Eriksson, Cassidy and Maloney did not make it into the duels.
Quarter finals
QF1: Mitch Evans vs Edoardo Mortara
Mortara started the quarter-final round with a small lead, extended it further and further and ultimately topped the New Zealander's time by 0.221 seconds. This secured the Mahindra driver his place in the semi-finals.
QF2: Felipe Drugovich vs. Dan Ticktum
The pole-sitter from the previous day, Ticktum, was behind Drugovich for a long time. It looked like Drugovich would progress. However, the Brit was able to make up time in the third sector and beat the Brazilian in the Andretti by 0.142 seconds in the end.
QF3: Jean-Eric Vergne vs Oliver Rowland
The reigning world champion and two-time champion Vergne fought a very close battle. At the end of the lap, however, Vergne was able to prevail and secure his ticket to the semi-finals. In the end, the Frenchman had a lead of 0.245 seconds.
QF4: Antonio Felix da Costa vs Taylor Barnard
The DS Penske driver Barnard was slightly ahead at the start of the lap, but Felix da Costa was gradually able to catch up and in the end the Portuguese driver in the Jaguar was an incredibly close 0.001 seconds ahead of Barnard. Felix da Costa therefore secured his ticket in the semi-finals.
Semi-final
SF1: Edoardo Mortara vs. Dan Ticktum
The fastest driver from the previous day's qualifying was also able to prevail in the duel against Mortara: The Briton edged out the Swiss driver in the Mahindra by 0.197 seconds. With the win, he once again made it into the final of qualifying.
SF2: Antonio Felix da Costa vs. Jean-Eric Vergne
Felix da Costa dominated the qualifying lap. Vergne made up some ground over the course of the lap and it was close once again in the final sector, but Vergne was 0.015 seconds down on the Portuguese driver in the end. This meant that Felix da Costa went onto the final battle for pole position.
Final: Dan Ticktum vs Antonio Felix da Costa
Ticktum and Felix da Costa, who had an accident during Saturday's race, met in the qualifying final. The Cupra Kiro driver Ticktum made the Jaguar driver look pale from the start to the end of the lap. In the end, Ticktum was a full 0.676 seconds faster than Felix da Costa. The Briton thus secured two pole positions in a row on the legendary streets of the Principality of Monaco.
The top 10 for Sunday's race are therefore Ticktum, Felix da Costa, Mortara, Vergne, Drugovich, Barnard, Evans, Rowland, Nato and Marti. Porsche's Nico Müller starts the race from 11th place, team-mate Pascal Wehrlein is 14th and the other German Maximilian Günther is 12th.
