On Thursday, the FIA World Motor Sport Council confirmed the final Formula E race calendar for the upcoming 2025-26 season - as expected, there will be a second E-Prix in China, while the other open date has been cancelled. This means that 17 races will take place for the first time in Formula E Season 12.

The FIA World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) has finalised the race calendar for the 2025-26 Formula E season: Compared to the previously shown draft, a race planned for 30 May is missing - presumably in Jakarta. The TBC race planned for 20 June will be held in Sanya (China). With 17 races in eleven different cities, it is nevertheless the most extensive calendar in the history of the electric series. The previous record was 16 races.

After several years in Berlin, the rookie test will now take place after the first Madrid E-Prix at the Circuito del Jarama. The additional "FP0 session" will take place in Miami next season, having been held in Jeddah last season.

“We are pleased to validate the full 2025/26 FIA Formula E World Championship calendar", said Pablo Martino, Head of Formula E at the FIA. "This unprecedented 17-race schedule blends the very best of long-standing Formula E venues and new additions in dynamic global cities, including a second event in China, which is such a relevant market for the series’ manufacturers and the country where it all began back in 2014."

Sanya returns after 7 years

With the race in Sanya on the Chinese island of Hainan, Formula E is returning to familiar territory: the series already held a race in the city on 23 March 2019. With the pandemic and the strict protection measures imposed by the Chinese government in the following years, a return was out of the question.

At the beginning of 2023, there were rumours for the first time that Formula E could return: A new entertainment park has been built in Sanya and the promoter was again focussing more on the electric racing series. Now the time has come, more than seven years after the first and so far only Sanya E-Prix.

Jakarta: No new track layout possible

According to colleagues of The Race, months of negotiations between Formula E and the authorities in the Indonesian capital Jakarta did not lead to the desired result: the track previously used in the Ancol district was deemed unusable for further races after racing there in 2022, 2023 and 2025.

However, a track near the Indonesian National Monument, which was already being considered as a possible venue for the Jakarta E-Prix in 2018, could not be realised in time. As a result, the race date scheduled for Jakarta on 30 May, a bank holiday in Indonesia, was removed from the calendar.

"The 2025 race was the final event under our current agreement," a Formula E spokesperson said. "Although we reached an understanding to extend into Season 12 and beyond, the confirmation process did not meet the timelines necessary for announcement. That said, the door remains open for Formula E to return to Jakarta in the future."
