Gen4 in the video: Another manufacturer test of the new Formula E cars has taken place

After the first joint Gen4 test by the Formula E manufacturers in Monteblanco in November, another test took place in mid-January. The development vehicles from Jaguar, Nissan, Lola, Porsche and Stellantis were in action at the Andalucia Circuit near Almeria (southern Spain). The new aerodynamics package for higher downforce was also tested. Another first: for the first time, some of the drivers present shared videos of the racing cars on social media afterwards.

For the second time, the manufacturers registered in Formula E for the Gen4 era travelled to Spain for several days of joint testing. As at the first test in Monteblanco, however, Mahindra's Gen4 car was missing: the Indian manufacturer had long considered switching to customer powertrains, but ultimately decided against it. Mahindra manufacturer status was only recently officially announced for seasons 13 to 16.

As an Instagram story by Formula E test driver James Rossiter shows, this was also the first time that racing situations were simulated in which three cars were travelling directly behind each other. The short video clip shows the Nissan ahead of the Jaguar and the Porsche. The drivers cannot be recognised, but the helmet design suggests that Nico Müller is driving the Porsche.

Both aerodynamic configurations in use for the first time

The Race's well-informed colleagues report that the package for higher downforce on the Gen4 cars was ready in time for the teams to drive it on the last day of testing. This is said to consist of several aerodynamic components: In addition to a different front wing, these include a larger rear wing, air deflectors at the front and additional panelling at the rear of the car. However, photos of the configuration with the larger wings have not yet been published.

Sebastien Buemi and Stoffel Vandoorne, who was also in the car at Monteblanco, took part in the tests for Jaguar. Lola had its two regular drivers Lucas di Grassi and Zane Maloney driving, while Porsche also had the two drivers from the works team, Nico Müller and Pascal Wehrlein, driving. It was a different story at Stellantis: newcomer Nick Cassidy was joined by "oldie" Andre Lotterer and experienced Formula E tester Theo Pourchaire, who will also drive for Citroen in the Formula E rookie training session in Miami. Nissan, on the other hand, opted for Sam Bird and Benoit Treluyer.

The Race also reported on the laps completed and the lap times of the five development cars in Almeria. According to the report, Stellantis and Porsche drove the most kilometres with 223 and 210 laps respectively, followed by Nissan (171 laps), Jaguar (130 laps) and Lola (105 laps). Porsche clearly achieved the fastest lap time, with the car from Weissach around 1.5 seconds faster than the competition. The other four cars were only around 0.4 seconds apart.

Number of laps and best times

Manufacturer Driver Number of laps Best time
Porsche Müller / Wehrlein 210 1:47,873
Jaguar Sebastien Buemi / Stoffel Vandoorne 130 1:49.322
Stellantis Nick Cassidy / Andre Lotterer / Theo Pourchaire 223 1:49.386
Lola Lucas di Grassi / Zane Maloney 105 1:49,529
Nissan Sam Bird / Benoit Treluyer 171 1:49.692

It is not yet known when the manufacturers will resume testing with their Gen4 cars. However, the break of several weeks between the double-header in Jeddah (13 and 14 February) and the European season opener in Madrid (21 March) would make sense here.
