The fifth race of the Formula E season, which took place in Miami last weekend, saw a chaotic final phase, which ended with penalties for some drivers, was mainly due to one scene - the accident between Jake Hughes, Maximilian Günther and Sebastien Buemi. Mitch Evans was also involved in the incident. Buemi, Günther and Evans were able to finish the race, but the race was over for Hughes after the accident. The drivers from DS Penske, Maserati MSG and Jaguar TCS Racing describe the situation from their point of view and speak of potential, at least for the race.

All four drivers lacked pace in qualifying. Buemi and Evans only managed 12th and 14th place, while Hughes and Günther formed the final row of the grid. As expected, the race was run in peloton style. The key scene happened on lap 20, which Günther describes as follows: "We were on a good way to collect points. We activated our attack mode at a very good time and were on our way to the front."

"I was then on the inside of Jake in the tight chicane", he explains further. "Seb was behind us and then came in quite late. In the end I was in a sandwich and couldn't do anything. I was able to stop, but then got hit from behind by Mitch, who pushed me onto Jake. We were then able to continue, but from that point on it was over for us."

"It's frustrating"

Jake Hughes, for whom the accident meant the end of the race, describes his view: "It's a real shame to end the weekend with a retirement because I really think we were on for a good result. One lap pace wasn’t our strength this weekend. But in the race, to see that we have the pace and strategy to climb the grid, be in a position for a top five finish or possibly more, that’s really positive."

"The team did a great job of executing the energy saving strategy and I was in a really good position in the closing stages and I really think a lot of points were on offer. That’s why it’s so frustrating, or more frustrating, when you’re taken out by another driver. Sure, that’s motorsport," adds the 30-year-old. Ex-Formula E driver Daniel Abt, on the other hand, assessed the situation somewhat differently on German-language television ServusTV and DF1: "Hughes already comes in with excess from the outside and pulls in there. Everyone is always a bit involved, but he is certainly not innocent."

Evans: "A disappointing race"

Mitch Evans also commented on his race: "Today had potential and it was exciting to be racing in Miami, but unfortunately, I got caught up in an incident with Jake and Max, so it was a disappointing race for me." Evans now wants to focus on the upcoming races in Monaco, where he won last year. As Jaguar is currently stumbling, he still sees a lot of work ahead for his team to be able to improve.

Both Günther and Hughes see great potential for good results and more points in Monaco. We will see whether this can be realised at the sixth and seventh races of the season, which will take place on 3 and 4 May.
