Jaguar in 1st and 2nd place: Mitch Evans wins 3rd free practice in Portland ahead of team-mate Cassidy

After last night's drama, Jaguar made a strong comeback in the third free practice session today. Mitch Evans won the session ahead of team-mate Nick Cassidy. Third was Jake Hughes, who put in another strong performance. There were also some encounters with the run-off areas today.

As usual, all the drivers took to the track at the start of the session. The first time was set by Sebastien Buemi with a 1:10.298 minutes. However, he was immediately beat by his brand colleagues Robin Frijns and Nick Cassidy, who had something to make up for after his driving mistake yesterday. Nyck de Vries was the first to break the 1:10-minute barrier. In the starting phase, Jake Dennis and Nick Cassidy left the track and came into contact with the grass.

After a good ten minutes, an unusual picture emerged at the front: the Mahindras had taken over the first four positions. The two ABTs and Edo Mortara were the first to complete attack mode laps. Müller took the lead ahead of Mortara, Lucas di Grassi did not rumble perfectly over the curbs in the chicane and only finished third.

This was not to last long, however, as Porsche and Nissan then turned up the heat: Firstly, Antonio Felix da Costa took the lead with three absolute best times. Behind him, Rowland's replacement Collet took second place. Team-mate Sacha Fenestraz took third place and pushed the two top Porsche drivers Dennis and Wehrlein into fourth and fifth place, leaving only Jake Hughes to take the lead: the Brit was in good form again today and quickly took the lead.

Evans and Cassidy with strong final phase including excursions into the grass

Max Günther came off the track in turn 1 before making it into the top 10 a few minutes later with a fast lap. Something we haven't seen that often this weekend. Shortly afterwards, Stoffel Vandoorne slid through the chicane.

Eight minutes before the end, Jaguar made a comeback and jumped into the top positions with both cars. Evans set the fastest time of the session with 1:08.6 minutes, which nobody was able to beat. Cassidy was unable to pose a threat to his team-mate as he had balance problems at the rear. He nonetheless managed to sort himself into second place. In the final minutes, several drivers such as Evans, Cassidy and Felix da Costa came off the track and tested the emergency exits and the condition of the grass. Jake Hughes finished third ahead of Felix da Costa and Buemi.
