Jaguar radio chaos: Cassidy did not receive "a single message", Evans "would have expected something in return"

It's actually a day to celebrate for Jaguar: At the end of the 2024/25 Formula E season, the British manufacturer not only secured its third consecutive race win with Nick Cassidy, but also unexpectedly finished runner-up in the drivers', teams' and manufacturers' championships. Nevertheless, Jaguar's questionable strategy and poor communication once again meant that there was only elation on one side of the garage and great frustration on the other.
After Mitch Evans braked for his team-mate Nick Cassidy in the qualifying semi-final to give him a chance of pole position, Cassidy started the race from first on the grid and was able to set the pace during the race. Evans, on the other hand, found himself involved in several duels with the other drivers in the top 5.
Evans' pit limiter failed
During the full-course yellow period, Evans' fate took its course: "My pit limiter went off a few times during the full-course yellow", he explained to e-Formula.news. As a result, Evans exceeded the maximum permitted speed of 50 km/h and was given a 5-second time penalty, which was added to his race time at the end. "That was very annoying, because otherwise it could have been a 1-2. That was obviously an unfortunate penalty", said Evans.
Since Jaguar was leading the race with both cars, one possible strategy would have been obvious: Cassidy could have let Evans past and slowed down the field to give his teammate a big enough lead. Evans also had this idea and radioed his race engineer several times to ask if he could swap positions with Cassidy.

"I think it would be obvious to do that. But it never materialised," Evans agonises. "I don't know why we didn't do it as a team. I was told to stay behind him during my Attack Mode. I played my part this morning and would have expected something in return."
Cassidy: "Haven't received a single message"
The problem was that Cassidy wasn't aware of the situation. "I obviously gave everything in the race to keep him in second place, but had no further information", explains the race winner. "Mitch and I finished first and second on the track. I always tried to support him. Unfortunately, it didn't end well for him."
When asked why Evans did not overtake him, Cassidy replied: "He definitely was allowed to overtake me. That's clear. But it is difficult to overtake me when I am 13 seconds away. The big thing is: I didn't get a single message, which is probably a bit disappointing (for him)."
"When I asked, I was right behind him"
"When I asked, I was at his gearbox - I was right behind him", Evans points out, and he's right. However, the truth is also that Cassidy had significantly more energy and Evans, as the leader, would have had to use a lot of energy to gain more than five seconds. Whatsoever, Jaguar decided not to swap positions - and not to inform either driver.
"I don't know what he was told and what he wasn't told. I just asked several times, but nothing happened", says Evans. The "Kiwi" can't really be happy about finishing runner-up in the teams' standings: "To be honest, it doesn't feel like that for me. I already lost the win yesterday and today I lost second place. It could have gone much better."
Cassidy: "My most dominant win in Formula E"
After the strategy and communication disaster a year ago in London, Jaguar has once again managed to cause unrest within the team - and especially with the driver with whom the team will probably continue to work next season. Cassidy's brilliant victory at the end of his thoroughly successful Jaguar time is just one of several topics.
But that doesn't dampen Cassidy's joy: "That was my most dominant win in Formula E today. I was able to lead the race and had more energy (than the competitors), which I didn't expect. You actually have an advantage here if you run in second or third place. I haven't been this relaxed in a race car for a long time", said the vice-champion.
