Jaguar wins the Formula E Team World Championship: Felix da Costa explains the decisive "Plan B"

At the Formula E season finale in London, not only was the Drivers’ World Champion crowned, but the title in the team standings was also still up for grabs. Jaguar and Porsche were locked in a close battle right up to the final race, which turned into a tactical battle on the track. In the end, Jaguar came out on top. Antonio Felix da Costa explains to e-Formula.com what "Plan B" the team had prepared.

Porsche had once again secured a strong starting position for the final race of the Gen3 era: Pascal Wehrlein and Nico Müller started from third and fourth on the grid, with Mitch Evans lurking immediately behind them in fifth. The situation was very reminiscent of Saturday, when the two Porsches had also started ahead of the Jaguar driver and had effectively kept him behind them throughout the race.

Jaguar therefore expected a repeat of this scenario. Evans knew that Porsche would try to keep him behind Wehrlein and Müller for as long as possible once again. Antonio Felix da Costa, too, braced himself for a tactical title battle.

Felix da Costa: "We knew what we had to do today"

The Portuguese driver started from no. 8 on the grid. It was therefore clear that Felix da Costa could hardly lead Jaguar to the title on the strength of his own finishing position alone. Instead, he was to help his team wherever necessary.

"We knew what we had to do today to achieve our goal, namely to beat both Porsches on the track," Felix da Costa told e-Formula.news. "We knew that if we managed that, we could secure the championship title. When I saw that they were starting to do it again right from the first lap, we had to pull our Plan B out of the bag and play along with their game."

As the race progressed, Felix da Costa did indeed manage to get ahead of Wehrlein. The Jaguar driver then slowed the field down significantly at times and consistently defended his position against the German. As a result, Wehrlein dropped out of the top 10 and thus out of the points.

Wehrlein & Müller finish without points: Evans drives Jaguar to the title

In the closing stages, Felix da Costa was once again right behind Wehrlein and put the Porsche driver under pressure. In the tightly packed midfield, Wehrlein eventually made contact with the rear of Joel Eriksson’s car. The Swede spun across the track in front of Wehrlein and Jake Dennis, who were consequently held up significantly.

Wehrlein was subsequently unable to make it back into the points. Müller also failed to score any points. Felix da Costa himself also finished the race without scoring any points, but his tactical work paid off for Jaguar. Evans crossed the line in fourth place, securing enough points to clinch the Teams’ World Championship for Jaguar. The British team ends the season on 288 points, 17 points ahead of Porsche.

Jaguar then opted to keep the celebrations relatively low-key. “We’ve still got the official prize-giving ceremony today, and we’ll have a drink together and enjoy the evening,” Evans told e-Formula.news.

Jaguar thus bids farewell to the Gen3 era as Team World Champions. The decisive factor in the season finale was not only the team’s speed, but also their willingness to respond to Porsche’s tactics with a plan of their own.
