On Tuesday, Formula E announced the race calendar for the upcoming 2025/26 season - the biggest in its history to date. For the first time, 18 races are planned for season 12. Madrid is a new addition with the circuit in Jarama, while the electric series is moving from Homestead-Miami to the more suitable Formula 1 circuit at Hardrock Stadium. Two races are currently still without a venue, and there are once again two long gaps in the calendar.
The calendar announcement follows the decision by the FIA World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) to approve the race calendar in the form proposed by Formula E. With 18 races in twelve different cities, it is the most extensive calendar in the history of the electric series. The previous record was 16 races. However, two single races are currently still without a venue - most likely Jakarta (Indonesia) and Sanya (China).
As in the previous year, the season opener will take place in Sao Paulo (Brazil) before the end of the year and is scheduled for December 6, 2024. It will be followed by the "familiar" January stop Mexico City, before once again travelling to Miami in the USA. After Formula E made a stop this year at the less suitable NASCAR circuit Homestead-Miami, next season it will drive on the Miami International Autodrome, familiar from Formula 1, where the Formula E "Evo Sessions" have already taken place. The circuit is much better suited to the series and allows for different track variants - Formula E will most likely not use the F1 circuit.
"Homestead has been a great partner for us, but is honestly quite far away from the city centre, and that's not really Formula E. We want to be close to the people," explained Chief Championship Officer Alberto Longo at a virtual media round on Monday, which was also attended by e-Formula.news. "The Hardrock Stadium is better located and they have five different layouts! So we are free to decide which one our car looks best on. Those were the two main reasons for the change."
European leg with long breaks
After Miami, Formula E will head to Saudi Arabia, where it will once again race twice in Jeddah. Traditionally, the two races of the "double-header" take place on Friday and Saturday. This will be followed by the first long break of five weeks before Formula E races in Madrid for the first time. The venue will be the permanent race track "Circuito del Jarama", where the pre-season test was held in 2024. A further six weeks later, the obligatory Berlin E-Prix will take place before heading to Monaco.
Unfortunately, Formula E has once again failed to avoid large gaps that take the momentum out of the championship every year. "It's not ideal and we always try to avoid that," explains Longo when asked by e-Formula.news. "The calendar is probably the biggest challenge we have as a company because there are so many factors to take into account that don't allow us to have the perfect calendar. If you only drive on permanent tracks, it's super easy, but in the city centres there are so many things to consider."
However, the Spaniard has hope for the future: "The more races we have, the fewer gaps we will have, that is clear. We want to add at least one new venue every year until 2030. With 16 to 18 venues and 20 to 22 races, I can almost guarantee you that we will have fewer gaps. But the most important thing for us is to race in the key markets globally - more important than avoiding long breaks. The priority for us is the markets."
2 unknowns in the calendar - Sanya & Jakarta?
After Monaco, there are two as yet unknown cities on the calendar. A recurring dilemma of Formula E, which it actually wanted to avoid this time. According to our information, it is most likely that Formula E will return to Sanya on the Chinese island of Hainan, where it already made its debut in 2019. The second TBC slot is likely to be filled with Jakarta. According to our information, an extension with the Indonesian metropolis depends on the success of this year's race, which takes place in just under two weeks' time.
The Asian leg of the calendar concludes two weeks later with the Shanghai International Circuit and, in July, with the Japanese capital Tokyo, where Formula E will start for the first time in the middle of the summer. Finally, on 15 and 16 August 2026, the season finale will take place in London, where racing is expected to take place for the last time at the ExCeL exhibition centre.
"We're incredibly proud of the global footprint we've built"
"This calendar is our most competitive yet, blending exciting new and existing venues with legendary circuits that define Formula E," says Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds. "With greater attention on calendar stability, we're becoming easier to find, engage with and attend, unlocking greater fan loyalty and love. Our debut in Madrid and increase in total races demonstrates our mission and intent to continually grow the series in key markets, while racing at Miami's International Autodrome takes our US presence to another level at a world-class facility."
Longo also said: "We're incredibly proud of the global footprint we've built for our 12th season, covering 2025-26. With at least two fantastic new circuits joining the impressive roster, including what will be a home race for myself in Madrid that has long been a goal of mine, we're enhancing the diversity of what fans can expect while staying true to our DNA with a blend of city street and built circuit venues."
