Late drama on the Saturday of the Formula E race in Monaco! While trying to secure the last place on the podium, Antonio Felix da Costa collided with Dan Ticktum just a few laps before the end of the race. The beneficiary of the situation was Ticktum's team-mate Pepe Marti, who was able to inherit third place after Ticktum was handed a penalty.
Race 1 of the Monaco double-header was characterised by a number of incidents, some of which also had an impact on the Formula E championship standings. However, the biggest incident was probably the accident between Antonio Felix da Costa's Jaguar and Dan Ticktum's Cupra Kiro in the battle for third place, which occurred just a few laps before the end of the race.
Felix da Costa had the better pace and had a clear advantage over Ticktum in terms of energy. He repeatedly tried to push past the Briton, who put up a tough defence. Even before the crash, both drivers came off the track in the harbour chicane. A short time later, a collision occurred between the two drivers shortly before the aforementioned corner: Ticktum overdid it in his defence, pinning Felix da Costa between himself and the wall shortly before the chicane and thus ending his race while he was still able to finish.
Felix da Costa spoke briefly about the situation to e-Formula.news: "That was not correct - what he did was simply wrong. He moved under braking."
For the scene, Ticktum was given a drive-through penalty after the race, which was converted into a time penalty of 33 seconds. Saturday's pole-sitter therefore dropped from third to 12th place and finished the race without any points. When asked whether the penalty for Ticktum was justified, Felix da Costa only answered with a "yes". Since his victory in Madrid, the Portuguese driver has scored just one point in three races.
Marti: "There is no better place for something like this"
The surprising beneficiary was Ticktum's team-mate Pepe Marti, who drove an unremarkable race and initially found himself in fourth place thanks to the many incidents at the finish. Ticktum's penalty ensured the Spaniard's first podium. In an interview after the race, he said: "I didn't even know what happened at first. I only saw the incident. I was already happy with fourth place. It hurts a little to know that Dan is the one who loses the podium."
"There is no better place for something like this than Monaco. You can really see how well our car is running. I was able to move up from 15th place to third. That's fantastic. I'm still a bit shocked. I didn't expect it to be like this", the Spaniard continued.
So the season remains exciting. Race number 10 is already scheduled for tomorrow, the second race of the double-header in Monaco. Tomorrow should once again provide plenty of excitement and drama.
