Turmoil in the Formula E driver market: According to information from The Race, driver Nick Cassidy is also set to leave Jaguar TCS Racing at the end of the current season after team principal James Barclay. From next season onwards, he will compete for one of the teams supplied by Stellantis (DS Penske or Maserati MSG Racing). He gets a long-term deal that will continue into the Gen4 era of Formula E, which starts at the end of 2026.
According to the colleagues at The Race, Cassidy is said to have decided to leave Jaguar between the end of April and the beginning of May, i.e. before the Monaco E-Prix. Things are currently going anything but well for the team: with 58 points, last season's team world champion is currently in eighth place in the overall standings.
Cassidy himself has been struggling with the new Jaguar I-Type 7 since the start of the season. The New Zealander has scored 33 points so far, with his best result being a third place in the second race of the Monaco E-Prix. This means he is currently only 11th in the drivers' standings, which is below average for him, as he has been one of the title contenders in the last two seasons.
What options does Cassidy have?
In the past, there has already been speculation about a swap between Cassidy and Antonio Felix da Costa. Cassidy would then drive for Porsche and Felix da Costa for Jaguar. However, this option does not seem particularly realistic given the Portuguese driver's form in recent months. However, if the report is to be believed, the 30-year-old is said to have already held talks with several manufacturers and teams. A switch to Stellantis currently appears to be the most realistic option, with Maserati MSG Racing said to offer the best chances. Cassidy could therefore replace Jake Hughes and become Stoffel Vandoorne's new team-mate.
There is also speculation about a move to DS Penske. There, Cassidy would meet up with an old acquaintance, ex-Jaguar technical director Phil Charles. The two already worked together in the 2023 season at Jaguar customer team Envision. However, this possibility does not seem feasible, at least in the short term, as both Jean-Eric Vergne and Maximilian Günther have a contract for next season.
Barclay: "Have to give him the best race car"
An official statement from Jaguar regarding Cassidy's departure is still pending. The team wants to focus on the remaining races: "Nick is an exceptional racing driver. Our focus at Jaguar TCS Racing is to give him the best possible race car for the remainder of the season so that he can continue to fight for points, podiums or wins," said Team Principal Barclay in a statement, adding: "An announcement on Nick's future with the team will follow in due course."
However, Cassidy will return to driving for Jaguar TCS Racing next weekend: Rounds 10 and 11 of the 2024-25 Formula E World Championship season are scheduled in Shanghai.
