Roll backwards at Maserati MSG Racing: According to a report by the colleagues at The Race, a takeover of the team by a conglomerate of investors hinted at during the Jeddah E-Prix has finally been scuppered. This further exacerbates the team's strained financial situation. The future of the former Venturi team, which has been competing in the electric series since the first Formula E season, is anything but secure.

There was already a big surprise in Jeddah: during qualifying, the TV signal showed a person in the Maserati MSG Racing pit box who was identified in the graphics as "Brooklyn Earick, Chairman & CEO Maserati MSG Racing". Apparently, however, Formula E was a little premature with this.

According to information from e-Formula.news, Maserati MSG Racing had wanted to announce the arrival of a new investor on Wednesday after the Jeddah E-Prix (19 February). However, the team did not make an official announcement that day. Nevertheless, the Santa Monica (California) based law firm Cooley LLP issued a press release that day announcing that they had advised on the acquisition of the "Maserati Formula E Team" by Redacted RnD, a company founded by Brooklyn Earick specialising in technology, sports, media and entertainment. Even the six lawyers from the firm involved are listed by name.

As The Race now reports, Earick, a former DJ and NASA employee, and the two owners of MSG Racing, Scott Swid and Jose Aznar, are said to have come to an agreement on Thursday ahead of the Jeddah E-Prix. The agreement contained conditions for the new owner, but these were apparently not honoured and the deal was later reversed.

Earick removes references to the team on social media

Earick changed his profiles on the social networks LinkedIn and Instagram just a few days ago. While on LinkedIn he had the title "Chairman, CEO and Principle Owner of Maserati MSG Racing competing in the FIA Formula E World Championship", on Instagram it read "Chairman & CEO, Maserati MSG Racing in Formula E". Both entries have since been changed and there is no longer any reference to the team.

He also subsequently changed the description of a photo he took in the Maserati pits in Jeddah. Instead of "Will never forget my first race weekend with the team. Mega vibes, mega drives. On to Miami!", it now only reads "Mega vibes, mega drives!".

Formula E must support Maserati MSG Racing financially

Maserati MSG Racing may now be in trouble due to the failure of the deal: According to the report, Formula E has already had to financially support the team, which is said to have been acutely threatened with insolvency several times in recent years and to have accumulated a large mountain of debt.

Italian sports car manufacturer Maserati, which acts as the team's title sponsor and also runs the drive systems of Stellanti's sister company DS Automobiles under its name, is said to be involved with only a very small budget. The FIA and Formula E even changed the regulations at the time to allow Maserati to enter in this way.

Whether Maserati MSG Racing has a future without new investors or even a buyer is more than questionable. Even with financial support from Formula E, the team will not be able to survive for long. Although Maserati has already announced that it will remain in Formula E for the Gen4 era, this seems more than questionable: just a few days ago, it was announced that the Stellantis Group had cancelled more than 1.5 billion euros of investment in Maserati and that an announced electric version of the Maserati MC20 will not be coming after all.

In sporting terms, however, things are still looking good for the team from Monaco: They are currently in 5th place in the team standings, ahead of Mahindra, Jaguar and Andretti. Driver Jake Hughes, who made his first podium appearance for his new team in Jeddah, is also fifth in the overall standings, while team-mate Stoffel Vandoorne is 13th. The next Formula E race takes place on 12 April in Miami.
