Edoardo Mortara achieved his first podium in the Gen3 era of Formula E in Jakarta. The Swiss driver crossed the finish line just 0.371 seconds behind race winner Dan Ticktum, making him a guest at the podium ceremony for the first time since his victory at the 2022 Seoul E-Prix. His team-mate Nyck de Vries had an even better result in sight, but had to retire his Mahindra car with a technical issue.
With starting positions 3 and 6, Mahindra Racing had already laid the foundation for a good result in qualifying, as overtaking was almost impossible on the dusty circuit - not counting the attack mode. Both benefited in the race from the fact that Taylor Barnard and Nick Cassidy were unlucky with the activation of their Attack Modes and dropped out of the leading group.
At times there was even a Mahindra one-two lead. However, a technical defect meant the end of the race for de Vries. Mortara drove the final laps in the slipstream of Ticktum, who had slipped past in the meantime thanks to Attack Mode, and looked as if he could drive faster than the Briton. However, he didn't risk an attack and drove home second place.
Mortara: "We implemented the strategy well"
"I am a little disappointed for my team, because I think more was possible for us, but I am obviously delighted," Mortara said after the race. "It took a long time to achieve this podium. When I look back, I can think of several occasions where it could have worked out with a bit more luck. I am very happy with the race today, we implemented the strategy well, especially with the first Attack Mode."
"We were a bit unlucky with the safety car and the full-course yellow, because I could have used my attack mode to overtake Dan," he continued. "Before the second attack mode I was ahead of him. But I am still very happy with second place and am looking forward to the next race"
de Vries: "We did everything right"
"I think it was a great race for us", Nyck de Vries describes exclusively when asked by e-Formula.news. "We had a good day overall as a team - with both cars in the duels and a very strong pace in the race. I think we did everything right to fight for the win."
"After the last Attack Mode, we had a six-second lead with a few laps to go," continued de Vries. "Even with the penalty, I had the feeling that we could still have achieved a very good result."
However, the timesheets do not confirm his statement: his lead over Dan Ticktum was just 4.011 seconds. However, this was all over again just a few corners later when the Dutchman stopped his car on track. "The DCDC broke, I had no brakes."
