Once again, Edoardo Martara was unable to convert a start from pole position into a race win. He only managed fourth place on the Formula E Saturday in Berlin, with Nick Cassidy and Oliver Rowland finishing ahead of him on the podium. Mortara can still be pleased, however, as he now leads the drivers' championship standings. But he doesn't waste a thought on that and calls his result positive despite everything. Cassidy and Rowland were also delighted with their results afterwards.
The race weekend got off to another positive start for Mortara. As so often this season, his Mahindra showed strong pace right from the start. He secured pole position again on Saturday, but could not quite keep up the pace in the race and ultimately finished the day in fourth place.
"The race was a bit difficult," said Mortara when asked by e-Formula.news. "It's always a bit chaotic here. We know that too. We may not have been as efficient as the others, but in the end we weren't that far away from first place. I think we got the best out of it and scored good points. I'm satisfied with the day."
Mortara takes the championship lead
Speaking of good points: With today's haul of 15 points, Mortara has now taken the lead in the drivers' championship. Rival Pascal Wehrlein had bad luck during the race and had to pit after a tyre failure, dropping him to the back of the field. He finished the race with no points. However, Mortara does not want to worry about the world championship just yet: "It's still too early for that."
Cassidy, who secured second place, spoke to e-Formula.news about the battle for the podium: "That was a really good race. In the end it came down to strategy, I think. The three of us were very similar in terms of speed and energy. That was a good battle."
Rowland also commented afterwards: "That was good. We tried to manage it as best we could. I struggled with the banana of the car throughout the race. I think that was one of my strongest races. We found a lot of positives, but also areas where we need to improve for tomorrow."
The second part of the double-header in Berlin Tempelhof awaits tomorrow, Sunday. The drivers will therefore have another opportunity to fight for points.
