"My race was destroyed!" - David Beckmann & Sergio Sette Camara collide at Formula E in Berlin

Tim Neuhaus

This was not how David Beckmann's first Formula E home race was supposed to go! The young German was forced to finish Saturday's race in Berlin without crossing the finish line after an accident. Nissan reserve driver Sergio Sette Camara is the one who took away Beckmann's chance of scoring points. The Brazilian, who was replaced by Beckmann at Cupra Kiro at the start of the season, admits his guilt, but leaves the German disappointed nonetheless.

Turn 3 saw a collision between the two. Sette Camara had activated his Attack Mode shortly beforehand and launched an overtake on the inside. Beckmann judges the attempt alone as unnecessary: "It makes no sense to overtake in turn 3, plus it was wet on the inside", he told e-Formula.news. In his opinion, Sette Camara should have waited: "In turn 5, he could have overtaken very easily with Attack Mode."

Beckmann worried about his car

On the inside line, Sette Camara lost his rear end and spun. Beckmann had no chance to avoid him. The rear of the Nissan smashed his rear left suspension on impact. While Sette Camara was able to continue, the damage to Beckmann's car meant the premature end of the race for him. The Porsche Junior is also worried about further consequences: "My race was destroyed and it is not yet certain whether we will have to change anything on the car."

Since Cupra Kiro already had to replace parts on his car in Mexico, a penalty for Sunday's race could follow. Beckmann is also mourning a missed opportunity to score points: "We didn't get to utilise the attack mode. A great pity, of course - we would definitely have scored points." Beckmann is currently last in the drivers' standings, still without a single point. The retirement on Saturday was all the more annoying.

Sette Camara takes the blame

In the post-race interview with e-Formula.news, Sette Camara took pity on the youngster: "It was completely my fault. I went to him straight after the race to apologise, but of course he is sad." The Brazilian replaced Norman Nato in Berlin, who is competing in the WEC in Sao Paulo instead, but has already been driving for the current Kiro team for several years. His comeback did not go optimally for him: "There was no 2nd free practice and I was not able to adapt well to the wet conditions. It was like driving on ice! I couldn't even give full power on the straights."

Sette Camara had hoped for a different Berlin race weekend - with sunshine and dry conditions in which he could have utilised his experience. In the wet, he is not yet at the level of the regular drivers, he admits: "I don't really know what to do in the wet yet. It hasn't clicked yet." For Sunday, he predicts: "If it rains, it will be another day of learning."

In less than 24 hours, both Beckmann and Sette Camara will have another chance to perform. The weather is expected to remain mixed, especially in the morning. In the afternoon, however, there is a chance of a dry race. Race Sunday starts again at 9 am (CEST) with the 3rd free practice session.
