Nick Cassidy triumphs in the 150th Formula E race in Mexico City: "It was a dream start"

Citroen Racing has every reason to celebrate after the race in Mexico City: Nick Cassidy won only the second race for the still young team at the Mexico City E-Prix. After an early elimination in the group stage of qualifying, the New Zealander only started from 13th place - and still won impressively thanks to a perfectly executed strategy.
The Mexico City E-Prix offered fans a spectacular race with constantly changing positions. Cassidy deliberately stayed at the back of the field in the first half of the race to save energy. It was only in the last ten laps that he made a decisive attack and activated his attack mode for the first time. With an unusual split of six and two minutes, he opted for a new strategy, with complete success.
12th career win for Cassidy
The first victory with Citroen is also Cassidy's twelfth success in Formula E. "I've always had top cars and been in top teams, but this twelfth victory is very high up there for me," explained the New Zealander after the race.
So high that Cassidy even made a bet with his team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne. Scurrilous bets are a tradition in Formula E and Cassidy also got carried away: in the interviews after the race, he hinted that he might have to shave off his hair to celebrate the victory. Whether we will actually see him with a new hairstyle at the next race in Miami remains to be seen. But as the saying goes: debts of betting are debts of honour.
Cassidy continues his winning streak
With this victory, Cassidy seamlessly continued his strong form from last season. He had already finished third on the podium at the season opener in Sao Paulo. He has now taken the lead in the drivers' standings, a clear sign that he could finally clinch the world title this season.
A good omen: in the past three years, the winner of the Mexico City E-Prix has also been world champion at the end of the season. We will see whether Cassidy can continue his winning streak on 31 January. That's when the Miami E-Prix will be held at the Miami International Autodrome.
