"It was obviously on the limit" - Maloney & Beckmann describe accident at Formula E race in Mexico

For David Beckmann, his second Formula E race as Cupra Kiro's full-time driver ended prematurely. On lap 28 of the Mexico City E-Prix, the German collided with rookie Zane Maloney (Lola Yamaha ABT) and rolled out with suspension damage. After the race, both youngsters commented on the accident, which ruined a possible points finish for Beckmann.

Eight laps before the end, Maloney was driving in Attack Mode with four-wheel drive after a strong day of racing up to that point. On the way to turn 12, he pulled onto the inside lane to overtake Beckmann in front of him. Contact was made between the two young drivers as they turned in.

"I'm not sure if David knew how far I was next to him," explained Maloney. "But I was already committed (to do the overtake). When he braked - he moved a bit on the brakes - I had to be even more committed. Then the corner became difficult."

"I just tried to make the corner as well as possible," recalls the Barbadian. "It was close, but I was in control. It was obviously on the limit with the corner entry and then we touched." Maloney was able to continue and finished the race in 15th position.

Beckmann: "It was just too close"

Beckmann did not see Maloney coming, he explains. "To be honest, I was concentrating on positioning the car for the exit (of the corner) so that I could maybe be next to him again afterwards. But Zane was very committed. I think he was in Attack Mode. I think it was just too close."

"A small hit directly damaged my suspension", describes Beckmann, who then came to a stop at the exit of turn 12 in front of the TecPro barrier. He was unable to continue and thus brought about the first safety car phase. "That was very unfortunate, but until then I had a very good race."

In fact, Beckmann fought for his first Formula E points in 10th position throughout the race, although the track took its toll: "We started from 12th, managed to have a good race and we were in the top 10 but then in the end, it got very difficult with the tyre degradation. For Jeddah, we need to work on our Qualifying to start closer to the front, avoid the chaos in the midfield, and with that, we can have a cleaner race."

Beckmann remains without points in Formula E for now. He will get his next chance - just like fellow rookie Maloney - on 14/15 February, when the electric series makes its first stop in Jeddah. "I'm really looking forward to it - it's a new track, a night race, and I think it will be very exciting", says Beckmann.
