Mahindra Racing will continue to compete in Formula E as a manufacturer with its own powertrain. The team announced this in a press release on Wednesday. This makes the Indian team the sixth manufacturer to commit to the new generation of cars. Previously, Jaguar, Nissan, Stellantis, Porsche and Lola had already given their firm commitment.
It was not an easy decision for Mahindra. Participating in the Formula E World Championship as a manufacturer is a costly affair, especially if you don't have a customer team buying the powertrain from you. The option of becoming a customer team for the first time in Formula E was also considered. However, the decision is now official: Mahindra will remain a manufacturer.
Velusamy: "A powerful platform for the development of new technologies"
Mahindra Chairman R. Velusamy describes the potential of the electric world championship to further develop its electric cars as reasons for the decision: "Formula E is a powerful platform for innovating new technology, giving us the ability to experiment, learn, and advance electric powertrain efficiency, sustainable materials, and software intelligence."
With regard to the further development of the race cars, Velusamy sees an exciting development step: "As we step into the Gen4 era, our ambition only grows stronger. Continuing this journey till 2030 is a testament to our belief in the sport, in electrification, and in India’s role in leading global sustainable mobility."

Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds is also delighted about Mahindra's official commitment until 2030: "As one of our founding teams, Mahindra has been with us since the very beginning, consistently championing electric racing and innovation. Their bold vision for sustainable mobility and continued investment in advanced EV technology perfectly align with Formula E’s mission. Mahindra’s enduring presence not only strengthens our position in a key market but also reinforces Formula E’s role as a global platform for driving positive change. We’re excited to see what they’ll achieve in this next chapter of performance and progress."
Looking to the future
While the other manufacturers have been working on their powertrains for Gen4 for some time and have already had their first test drives with the new cars, Mahindra is only now committing to the next generation of vehicles. The extent to which this will affect development and competitiveness in the Gen4 era, remains to be seen.
Mahindra Team Principal Frederic Bertrand, however, is positive: "With this announcement, we now have the platform to keep growing and achieve even greater success in the future. None of this would be possible without our colleagues across the Mahindra Group."
"They have bought into the project and the vision, and we will keep working hard to not only make India proud but also showcase exactly why it has the potential to be a major player on the world stage in the automotive and technology industries", Bertrand adds. "Their enthusiasm to ‘Scream Electric’ is hugely inspiring to the whole team, and we will continue to represent them with pride in this next exciting chapter of our Formula E story in the coming years."
The Indian team's journey will continue next week at the Season 12 opener in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
