Maserati will remain in Formula E until at least 2030, the Italian sports car manufacturer announced on Tuesday afternoon. That means Maserati - currently one of two brands of the Stellantis Group in the electric racing series - will continue to compete as a manufacturer in Formula E in the entire Gen4 era. What will happen with sister company DS Automobiles remains to be seen.
The Modena-based sports car manufacturer joined Formula E for the ninth season as a partner of the MSG Racing team and has since celebrated two race wins with Maximilian Günther. In addition, there have been six podium finishes and two pole positions in two seasons. Following rumours that Maserati might withdraw from Formula E, it is now clear that the brand with the trident will remain with its fans for another four years - a total of six more seasons.
"We are extremely proud to continue our commitment to as prestigious and innovative a platform as Formula E," says Maserati CEO Santo Ficili. "For this brand, the bond between the track and the road is unbreakable and the evolution of the single-seaters shows how many possibilities for development electric mobility holds. We will continue to draw major developments from the races in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, to transfer them into our 100% electric range."
With the start of the Gen4 era in just over two years' time (seasons 13-16), Formula E will have a completely new car that is set to make another significant leap in terms of performance. An increase in power from 350 to up to 600 kW output and a recuperation capacity of up to 700 kW are currently planned. Before Maserati, Jaguar, Porsche, Nissan and Lola had already committed to the Gen4 era. However, the future is still uncertain for Mahindra Racing and DS Automobiles.
"Engagement of other Stellantis brands will be specified later"
"Further details regarding the commitments of Stellantis brands to the Gen4 era will be announced in due course, as Formula E continues to attract world-class manufacturers committed to shaping the future of electric mobility," reads the official announcement from Maserati. It is not clear whether this wording indicates that DS will remain or whether another Stellantis brand might join.
"For over 10 years, we have been developing high-efficiency powertrains for DS and Maserati, and will continue to work on these road-relevant technologies in as competitive and promising a championship as Formula E," explains Jean-Marc Finot, Senior VP at Stellantis Motorsport. "The conditions of engagement of other Stellantis brands will be specified later."
Jeff Dodds, CEO of Formula E, is delighted with Maserati's somewhat surprising decision to stay. Stellantis and Maserati have shown remarkable performances on the track in the past and are a valuable part of Formula E, he says. "Their ongoing involvement alongside other global OEMs such as Nissan, Jaguar, Porsche and Lola, is a testament to Formula E's status as a competitive and relevant platform for the future of electric mobility. We can't wait to see the House of Trident continue its journey with Formula E and build into a new era of enhanced performance, innovation and on track action."
