A few weeks before the start of the final season with the Gen3 Evo cars, Formula E and the FIA have already officially unveiled the successor model: The Gen4 car of the electric racing series promises great leaps forward in terms of performance, sustainability and innovation.

The Gen4 car is set to become the new benchmark in several respects: The cars of the fourth Formula E generation have over 600 kW of power and permanent all-wheel drive. The vehicle is also made from 100 per cent recyclable materials.

Every single component in the car's supply chain was selected based on recyclability and the reduction of environmental impact, among other factors. 20 per cent of the vehicle is made from recycled materials. This means the Gen4 vehicle sets new standards and is the most sustainable racing car of all time.

Already covered more than 8,000 test kilometres

The vehicle has two different aerodynamic configurations: One with high downforce, optimised for qualifying and one-lap performance, and another with low downforce, developed specifically for racing conditions. While the full 600 kW of power can be utilised in qualifying and attack mode, 450 kW is available to the drivers in the race. Energy recovery during braking even amounts to 700 kW.

To ensure that the cars have enough energy during the race, the capacity of the batteries is increased to 55 kWh. Drivers currently have a maximum of 38.5 kWh of usable energy at their disposal. The disadvantage: the battery will be heavier. Together with the vehicle body, which is also heavier as it is significantly larger, the weight is more than one tonne.

Nonetheless, the performance is on a completely different level: during the test drives, which were conducted by ex-Formula E driver James Rossiter, the car reached top speeds of more than 200 mph/320 km/h. In total, the mule car from manufacturer Spark Technologies has travelled more than 5.000 miles/8,000 km to date.

Dodds: "Far more than just a racing car"

"The Gen4 car is far more than a race car," explains Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds. "It represents over a decade of progress, innovation, and ambition in electric racing. Co-developed with the FIA, it stands as the most advanced, demanding, and sustainable machine we’ve ever built, redefining what’s possible in performance and environmental responsibility. With Gen4, Formula E strengthens its position as the world’s most forward-thinking sport and a true racing pioneer."

"The Gen4 is designed for the pioneers of tomorrow," says Alberto Longo, Chief Championship Officer of Formula E. "It's a car built for wheel-to-wheel battles and pure racing action. I’d like to thank our partners at the FIA for their collaboration in this incredible innovation, and we look forward to further collaboration as our manufacturers and teams hone these machines with their performance experts. Together with the FIA, we've created the most challenging Formula E car to master, and we can’t wait to see the incredible racing it will deliver for fans around the world."

Nawarecki: "The most exciting and electrifying era for Formula E"

"We are very proud to present the innovative Gen4 Formula E single-seater," said Marek Nawarecki, Director of Sport for Circuit Racing at the FIA. "A a car that once again raises the bar in terms of the capabilities of electric technology in motorsport, and underscores just how far the Formula E World Championship has come since 2014. It is marking the dawn of a bright new era for Formula E that we have no doubt will be its most exciting and electrifying yet."

The first test for the manufacturers registered for the Gen4 era - Jaguar, Lola, Nissan, Porsche and Stellantis - is already taking place this week: In Monteblanco in south-west Spain, the maiden voyage of the Gen4 powertrains will take place, as Porsche Formula E boss Florian Modlinger revealed in Valencia when asked by e-Formula.news. The first race with the new cars is scheduled to take place in December 2026.
