Pascal Wehrlein is now the championship favourite following his Formula E victory in London: "The aim is to win again tomorrow"

Following his dominant victory in Saturday’s race in London, Pascal Wehrlein is once again at the top of the drivers’ standings and, ahead of tomorrow’s final, already has one hand on the World Championship trophy. With a strong performance, the Porsche driver eliminated several of his rivals in the title race.

Wehrlein’s day began with a perfect qualifying session, in which he secured pole position and, with it, three crucial points. Team-mate Nico Müller finished second, right behind him, which played right into the hands of the Season 10 world champion.

Müller blocked the drivers behind him, whilst Wehrlein was initially able to pull away. World Championship rival Mitch Evans therefore pitted very early for his pit boost, followed shortly afterwards by Müller. Later in the race, Lucas di Grassi’s crashed Lola Yamaha ABT triggered a full-course yellow phase, which came at a very opportune moment for Wehrlein and brought Evans’s comeback to a halt.

Full-course yellow proves Evans’ undoing

Whilst Wehrlein benefited greatly from the full-course yellow due to the minimal time lost, both Evans and Müller fell far behind. Evans could only limit the damage by fighting his way up to 8th place. He will therefore be nothing more than an outsider in the battle for the World Championship tomorrow.

Wehrlein was understandably delighted with the result. At the post-race press conference, he said: "It was a brilliant day. We’d been performing well throughout the whole weekend. We also executed qualifying perfectly, putting both cars on the front row. The race then simply went according to plan."

When asked about the help he received from his team-mate, he said: "He helped me a lot. Unfortunately, with the strategy of stopping early, he was on the wrong side because of the full-course yellow. Otherwise, I think the team could have secured a one-two on the podium.

“Plan A is to try and win the race again,” he says ahead of Sunday’s season finale. "First and foremost, I need to make sure the car is right up the front in qualifying. Of course, the aim is to win. If we can’t do that, we’ll do the maths if we need to."

Only three drivers can theoretically become world champions

Wehrlein’s main rival for the world title remains Jake Dennis, who finished the race in second place and now sits second in the overall standings. He trails by five points. Evans’s meagre points haul has set him back significantly in the battle for the world title. He is already 21 points behind Wehrlein. His chances of winning the title are therefore extremely slim. Hence, sunday’s race at the London E-Prix promises to be a thrilling final race with the Gen3 Evo cars.
