Around a year after his departure as team principal of Formula 1 team Red Bull Racing, Christian Horner was a guest at the Monaco E-Prix. Following his first-ever Formula E race, he spoke enthusiastically about the racing in the all-electric series on the legendary Circuit de Monaco and its entertainment value.
"It's my first time at a Formula E race and it's been great to see things," Horner said. He particularly enjoyed being able to take in the event as a spectator, as he admitted in Monaco. "It's really nice being at a race where you have absolutely no pressure. I'm going to enjoy the weekend and learn a bit more about this championship."
"It was an interesting race on Saturday – plenty of action. Any race with these guys, there's always going to be plenty going on," Horner said. What stood out to him in particular was that Formula E races in Monaco — unlike Formula 1 — do not resemble a "procession", with drivers simply following one another for the entire race. "Overtaking around Monaco's non-existent in other categories but it's interesting to see here."
"A great opportunity to see other forms of motorsport"
"It's a great opportunity to see other forms of motorsport and there are so many faces here from the Formula 1 world," Horner continued. Alongside reigning world champion Lando Norris, Formula 1 drivers Gabriel Bortoleto, Nico Hülkenberg and Carlos Sainz were also in attendance.
Horner paid particularly close attention to Dan Ticktum's performance. The Briton was part of Red Bull's junior programme for a period earlier in his career and starred in Monaco with two pole positions. "It's great to see him doing so well," Horner said of the Cupra Kiro driver. "Dan was one of our talented drivers in the early part of his career."
David Coulthard's demonstration run in the Gen4 development car also left an impression on Horner: "The Gen4 is quite a beast! It's the next step for these guys and it looks like a big step in power as well."
