Porsche clinches the Formula E Manufacturers' title already in Tokyo: "Defending the title was only possible together"

The battle for the first world championship title in the 2026/27 Formula E season has been decided: Porsche has successfully defended its title in the manufacturers’ championship thanks to Jake Dennis’s third place and Nico Müller’s seventh place, whilst Jaguar managed to score just a single point. With a 97-point lead, Porsche can no longer be caught in London.

Things weren’t looking so good for Porsche ahead of the race: for the first time since the Berlin E-Prix, no Porsche 99X Electric was on pole position, with Mahindra driver Edoardo Mortara taking the top spot. The previous day’s winner, Dan Ticktum in the Cupra Kiro, was the best-placed Porsche in third on the grid, whilst the two works team cars started from ninth and tenth.

On the wet track, Pascal Wehrlein and Nico Müller moved up to sixth and eighth place respectively by activating Attack Mode early on. However, as had been the case in Shanghai, the track continued to dry out in Tokyo too. The Porsche drivers and Ticktum were among those who had opted for a wet-weather set-up and lost ground.

Müller uses full-course yellow to change tyres

When a full-course yellow was declared following an accident involving Cupra Kiro driver Pepe Marti on lap 15, Müller was the only driver to pull into the pits and switch to a set of tyres with tyre pressures for dry conditions. He lost just five positions and was able to mount another attack in the closing stages. Just like Jake Dennis: the Andretti driver had bet on a drying track from the start and got faster with every lap.

Müller’s pit stop allowed him to gain another position. The Brit saved a lot of energy and used Attack Mode on lap 29 to close in on the leading group. A red flag caused by a pile-up at the back of the field prevented him from challenging the two leaders, so he finished in third place. Müller managed to climb as high as seventh place, whilst Ticktum and Wehrlein finished the race in 12th and 13th places.

Modlinger: "The right decision"

"Another day of tricky conditions in Tokyo," says Florian Modlinger, Director Factory Motorsport Formula E at Porsche. “First of all, a big thank you to our development team, the factory team and our customer teams, who helped Porsche secure a second Manufacturers’ World Championship title. I’m really proud of everyone involved in this project."

"On our side, we came away with six valuable points thanks to Nico’s seventh-place finish," he adds. "It could have been more after making the right call to switch to dry tyre pressures, but the time lost in the pits due to a procedural error ultimately limited us to seventh. Without that, he could have been in the fight for the win or a podium. On Pascal’s side, it was another tough day. However, it’s still all to play for."

Laudenbach: "World Championship title a major success"

With Pascal Wehrlein in third place in the drivers’ standings and second place in the team standings, Porsche still has every chance of securing the two remaining world championship titles at the season finale in London. The London E-Prix takes place on 15 and 16 August.
