In the new year 2025, as with every Formula E race, it is the task of the race stewards of the FIA to check compliance with the Technical and Sporting Regulations. If an offence is found, they must also decide on the penalty. As usual, you will find a list of all decisions made by the Formula E race stewards in this article.

Omar Chavez, Achim Loth and Michael Schwägerl will take on this task at the Mexico City E-Prix 2025. They will be supported by former racing driver Alexander Sims. The 36-year-old Brit drove in Formula E himself from 2018 to 2022 and completed a total of 55 races for BMW i Andretti and Mahindra Racing. His greatest success came at the 2019 Diriyah E-Prix, where he secured pole position twice and won the second race.

Penalties before the E-Prix

  • Porsche received a fine of 5,000 euros because the investigation of Pascal Wehrlein's car after his accident in Sao Paulo revealed that the crash detector was not working. In the case of a crash, this system should interrupt the power connection from the battery for safety reasons. Porsche must also ensure that the system works on all six Porsche cars - the two works cars and the Andretti and Cupra Kiro customer cars.

Penalties during Shakedown

  • Dan Ticktum received a warning for driving out of the pit lane exit during Shakedown despite a red traffic light. However, as he stopped immediately, the race stewards left it at this penalty. Ticktum stated that he had been distracted by a message on the dashboard of his car.
  • Nyck de Vries received a fine of 1,000 euros because the energy level of his battery was below the required minimum during the pit boost.
  • Team-mate Edoardo Mortara was also fined 1,000 euros for the same reason.
  • Maximilian Günther also received a fine of 1,000 euros. During his pit boost, four of the team's mechanics had been in the working area of the pit lane. For safety reasons, however, only two mechanics are allowed to be there at this time.

Penalties during Free Practice

  • Sebastien Buemi was fined 500 euros because one of the mechanics was not wearing the mandatory yellow armband when he was working on the car.
  • Pascal Wehrlein was fined 1,000 euros because his battery state of charge was higher than it was allowed to be according to the battery manufacturer's specifications during the first free practice session.
  • Pascal Wehrlein received a further fine of 1,000 euros because the mechanic on his car was not wearing the prescribed gloves when he carried out the attack charge.
  • Antonio Felix da Costa was also fined 1,000 euros for the same offence.

Penalties during qualifying

  • Sebastien Buemi's lap times on lap 5 and lap 7 were cancelled because the torque measured at the rear wheels did not correspond to the homologated mapping of the throttle pedal. When homologating their powertrains, manufacturers must specify how much power is drawn from the battery at which position of the throttle pedal. If there are deviations, penalties are imposed.
  • Nick Cassidy's lap time on lap 5 was also cancelled for the same reason.
  • And a third Jaguar-powered driver was affected: Robin Frijns' lap times in laps 4, 6 and 9 were also cancelled.
  • Nyck de Vries received a three places grid penalty for impeeding Sam Bird. The Mahindra driver will start the race in P14.
  • Jake Hughes received the same penalty for impeeding Robin Frijns. Hughes hast to start the race in P16.
  • Lucas di Grassi was also demoted by 20 positions due to a change of the powertrain on his Lola Yamaha ABT. As the penalty was announced after the final grid was published, he will have to serve it at the next race in Jeddah.

Penalties during and after the race

  • Nick Cassidy was fined 1,200 euros, because we was driving too fast in the pit lane on his way to the grid. The Jaguar driver was driving 62 km/h instead of the permitted 50 km/h.
  • Sam Bird received a five-second time penalty and a penalty point for causing a collision with Edoardo Mortara.
  • Lucas di Grassi subsequently received a drive-through penalty for activating attack mode only once during the race. This was converted into a time penalty of 27 seconds.
  • Dan Ticktum was fined 1,000 euros for speeding in the pit lane after the race. He was caught driving at 60 km/h.
  • Taylor Barnard subsequently received a five-second time penalty for leaving the track and thus gaining an advantage. This dropped him from 10th to 14th place. Jake Hughes therefore moved up into the points. Barnard also received a penalty point.
  • Sebastien Buemi subsequently received a ten-second time penalty for not using the total amount of time of his attack mode during the race.
  • Edoardo Mortara received the same penalty because of the same breach of rules.
