Porsche only 9th! Here's how all the Formula E teams performed in the races with and without Pit Boost

Formula E has already completed eleven of 16 races in the 2024-25 world championship season. In four of these races - the first race of each of the four double headers of the current season - the new fast-charging technology, known as Pit Boost, was used. The other seven races took place without the mandatory pit stop. However, if you compare the results of these races with each other, there are clear differences - especially for Jaguar and Porsche.

After a delay of around two years, the FIA and Formula E have brought pit stops back to the electric racing series in some races: the so-called Pit Boost, which was initially planned under the name Attack Charge. The drivers have to come into the pits during the race, and a total of 3.85 kWh is recharged in 30 seconds with an output of 600 kW. This corresponds to ten per cent of the amount of energy that can be used in the races. Changing tyres or other technical work on the cars is prohibited during the Pit Boost.

The teams therefore have one more tactical option, which is also clearly noticeable: the Pit Boost races are subject to a completely different dynamic than the classic races without mandatory pit stops. This is also reflected in the results if you look at the races with and without a mandatory pit stop in isolation. We have left out the bonus points for pole position and fastest race lap in the top ten.

Race without Pit Boost: Porsche leads the way by far

Porsche clearly dominates the races where no pit stop is mandatory: the German team took eight podium places in the seven races, with three double podiums. Only in Jeddah, when Antonio Felix da Costa, who had started from fourth place, was taken out of the race by Max Günther on the first lap, did no Porsche driver finish in the top three at the end of the race.

Nissan followed some way behind Porsche. Although Oliver Rowland won three of the seven races without Pit Boost and finished second in Monaco, the team scored 64 points fewer than Porsche. Jaguar is in third place, the reigning team world champion celebrated two race wins without Pit Boost, and Nick Cassidy also finished on the podium in Monaco.

The teams behind them are closely bunched: Andretti, DS Penske, McLaren and Maserati are separated by just twelve points. Behind them, Mahindra and Envision are almost level, followed at some distance by Lola Yamaha ABT and Cupra Kiro, also separated by just a few points.

Race with Pit Boost: DS Penske in front, Porsche & Jaguar in the middle of nowhere

The picture is completely different in the races with mandatory pit stops: DS Penske is in front here, just ahead of Nissan. The US team won the Pit Boost races in Jeddah and Shanghai with Max Günther, and even won the race in China with a 1-2 victory. Nissan scored at least 18 points in each of the four races: Oliver Rowland finished in the top two three times, and in Shanghai most recently the two Nissans finished 5th and 6th.

Mahindra and McLaren follow at some distance: Both teams proved to be much more consistent in the Pit Boost races and scored points each time. Taylor Barnard in particular was very successful here and finished on the podium three times. Nyck de Vries achieved the only Mahindra podium of the season in the Pit Boost race in Monaco.

Once again, the gap is quite large, then comes Maserati MSG Racing - the team from Monaco has also finished on the podium in a race with a pit stop: Stoffel Vandoorne achieved a surprising race win in Tokyo thanks to a tactical trick. He was followed almost equally by Cupra Kiro, Andretti and Envision.

In contrast, Porsche is in ninth place: Pascal Wehrlein's sixth place in Monaco is the best result by a driver from the team from Weissach in a race with Pit Boost. The points haul from all four races combined is a meagre 16 points. However, that is still worlds better than Jaguar: the reigning team world champion scored a single point in the Pit Boost races: Nick Cassidy finished tenth in Tokyo!

Lola Yamaha ABT is still without any points in the races with pit stops.

DS Penske, McLaren, Mahindra & Cupra Kiro significantly more successful in pit stop races

Comparing the results of the teams in the different races, it must of course be taken into account that seven of the eleven races so far this season have taken place without Pit Boost - around 64 per cent of the points were awarded here, only around 36 per cent in the races with a pit stop.

Jaguar and Porsche have scored more than 90 per cent of their points in these races. Andretti is also well above the mathematical average with more than 70 per cent of its points. For Lola Yamaha ABT, the figure is even 100 per cent - but as the team has only scored points in three races this season, the significance here is obviously very limited.

The situation is completely different for DS Penske, McLaren, Mahindra and Cupra Kiro: these four teams scored more points in the four Pit Boost races than in the seven races without a mandatory pit stop. They have obviously managed to use the additional tactical option to their advantage so far this season, while other teams have found it much more difficult.

The next Formula E race on 21 June in Jakarta will again take place without Pit Boost, before the season comes to an end with the two double-headers in Berlin and London. Here we will again see one race with and one race without the feature.
