Report: Norisring could replace Berlin on the Formula E race calendar as early as 2027
Thomas Grüssmer
Since its first season, Formula E has held its German races exclusively in the capital city of Berlin. However, this could possibly change for 2027: The Norisring in Nuremberg, which has been a permanent fixture on the DTM racing calendar for many years, is being discussed.
Formula E and Berlin have belonged together since the first season in 2014/15. Since then, the German capital has exclusively hosted the races of the electric racing series in Germany.
In ten of the first eleven seasons, the races were held on different track variants at Tempelhof Airport. This will also be the case next May, when the twelfth Berlin E-Prix takes place.
According to the colleagues at The Race, this could change at the start of the Gen4 era, which will begin at the end of 2026. Formula E is said to have been in talks with the city of Nuremberg since 2025. A possible date for the first Nuremberg E-Prix would be the weekend of 26 to 27 June 2027.
One possible consideration here would be synergies and mutual advertising with the DTM, which would presumably hold its races on the circuit one week later.
However, a deal is still a long way off. Oli McCrudden, Vice President of Host Cities for Formula E, told The Race: "The venue must be considered in maximum co-operation with the city and the suppliers responsible for the construction of the circuit. The impact of the construction must be minimised for the city."
German market very important for Formula E
The German market remains extremely important for Formula E. Not least because of the commitment of Porsche, which will be racing with two teams from season 13. "Germany is like Great Britain in this sense and must remain on the calendar," McCrudden continued.
"Berlin was cool, but after ten or eleven years on the calendar it might be time to do something different and freshen it up a bit. But the option to return to Tempelhof still exists," he concluded.
Dodds: "Berlin is an iconic electric racetrack"
Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds certainly seems convinced of the Norisring as a race track: "As a street circuit, it's fantastic!" At the same time, however, he also weighs up: "The track attracts a huge number of people. It is a great venue for races. On the other hand, there are many people within Formula E who strongly favour Berlin. Fact is that it is now an iconic electric race track that we have made our own."
The Norisring was already being discussed for Formula E in 2016. At that time, Tempelhof Airport had to be abandoned. However, this never materialised. The race was ultimately held in the centre of Berlin.
